Assessment and operation optimization of iron ore products under industry-scale blast furnace conditions towards decarbonization using state-of-the-edge CFD models

Biography

Professor Yansong Shen is a full Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of New South Wales (Tenured), and is holding a prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow. He obtained his BEng and MEng degrees from Northeastern University (China) and PhD degree from UNSW. He initiated and is leading a vibrant research lab - Process Modelling and Optimization of Reacting Flows "ProMO Lab" (www.promo.unsw.edu.au). He published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in top-tier multidisciplinary journals with h-index 39 as of 2022, secures 12 ARC and >20 highly competitive research grants from national and international funding agencies including ACARP/ARENA/BAJC, in total over AUD 25M, established industry engagements in Australia and overseas, and won several honours and highly-competitive national fellowships e.g. ARC APDI Fellowship (2012) and ARC Future Fellowship (2019). His group designed and scaled-up several new technologies including new low-carbon ironmaking technologies, iron ore and coal/biomass processing and upgrading, and reactors design including green hydrogen electrolysers and hydrogen storage tanks. Many of them have been patented, implemented and practised in industries with measurable benefits. He is selected as the President of Australian Particle Technology Society, Chartered member IChemE, TMS, AIST, and invited/plenary speaker at several international conferences. Mining Engineer graduated at UFOP - Brazil. The author has more 10 years of experience in the mining indutry, working as a mine planning engineer, long and short term, mainly in iron ore open pit mines in Brazil. Since he has been working for Samarco Mining, he has been interested in conveyor belt mining, which led to the develpoment of the long term conveyor belt mining plan for the company and this work related to the environmental benefits of the method.

Biography

Jarrod Bassan has over 25 years of experience working with the mining industry in the adoption of digital technology. He started his career with BHP and specialised in operational systems for the iron ore supply chain. Subsequently he worked with coal and other mineral commodities, as well as power transmission and manufacturing to enable new operating models enabled by the adoption of technology. He currently leads Hatch's Integrated Operations and Remotization practice in the Australia region, where his focus is on establishing improved decision-making capabilities across the mining and metals value chains.

Biography

Marco Steinberg, born in 1978 in Cologne, studied at the TFH in Bochum and is Dipl.-Ing. for processing and refining of raw materials. He lives with his wife Katrin and his two children in Hürth, near Cologne. In 2003, he started his professional career at the Rhiem & Sohn GmbH in Erftstadt as Site Manager. After that, he worked for many years at the company AKW Apparate & Verfahren GmbH, Bavaria and Engineering Dobersek as well as MBE Coal & Minerals GmbH, Cologne. He was essentially responsible for technical process solutions of major international projects. Since 2016, Marco Steinberg is part of allmineral Aufbereitungstechnik GmbH in Düsseldorf, after he worked for the MBE Coal & Mineral Group as authorized officer Vice President Global Sales & Marketing. Marco Steinberg was the CEO of allmineral group from 2016 till 2022. Since 2016, he is the Managing Director of HAZEMAG allmineral Australia with focus on the iron ore industry and dry beneficiation solution for the coal industry in Australia.

Case Studies Illustrating the role of F-Series Reconciliations in Production Forecast Improvement Initiatives

Biography

Steve Loach was born in Christchurch New Zealand and completed a BSc in Geology and a BA in Geography at Canterbury University. In 1995 he moved to Western Australia and has been employed in a wide variety of mine geology and near-mine exploration roles in gold, nickel, copper and iron ore. While working he completed an MSc in Ore Deposit Geology at the University of Western Australia. For the last decade he has specialised in the field of geological reconciliations and is the Reconciliations Officer for BHP, WAIO (BHP, West Australian Iron Ore). He is now widely recognised as an expert in this field and frequently provides advice to the highest levels of BHP management and to various BHP operations outside of WAIO. He was the lead author of the BHP Global Standard for Reconciliations and a key contributor to the BHP Global Standard for Inventory Measurement and Reporting. He also produced and directed a documentary on the geology of the Pilbara and is currently producing a documentary on WAIO operations from pit to port.
