Speaker
Mr Ben Russell
Engagement Manager
Standards Australia
Australia’s contribution to international standards in iron ore
10:30 AM - 10:45 AMBiography
Ben is the Engagement Manager at Standards Australia for the Mining sector. His role is to manage and encourage engagement between consumers, government, industry and the standards development process, nationally and internationally. This includes assisting in the process of creating proposals for new standards and changes to existing ones, as well as continuously work with the community to help get the right stakeholders onto technical committees.
Rachel Maree
Experimental Scientist
CSIRO
CSIRO iron ore proficiency program
10:45 AM - 11:00 AMBiography
I am an Experimental Scientist at CSIRO with an interest in Industrial Chemistry and expertise in X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) application development. My greatest impact is to industry with the delivery of the CSIRO Iron Ore Proficiency test. Participation in this test directly improves the analytical capability of participants, both national and international. I also report the analytical methods used by participants of this test to ISO/TC102 SC2 Iron Ore and Direct Reduced Iron - Chemical Analysis Committee to inform their future directions. I contribute to CSIRO Research goals by providing specialised, accurate and timely elemental characterisation to researchers and other customers.
Mr Derek Clauson
Specialist Digital Orebody
Hancock Iron Ore
A comparative study of blastcone sampling methods and flitch distributions at the Roy Hill Mine
11:00 AM - 11:15 AMBiography
Derek is a geoscientist currently working in the Geomodelling / Digital Orebody team for Hancock Iron Ore. He has worked for the last 5 years at HIO with time spent in Resource Definition, Geometallurgical Drilling, Mine geology and Modelling. Before joining HIO, Derek worked for six years with ExxonMobil in Melbourne, gaining experience across Exploration, Development, and Production projects in Australia and Papua New Guinea. He holds a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in Geology and Geophysics from Curtin University, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Data Science from UNSW.
Dr Ralph Holmes
Honorary Fellow
CSIRO
Q&A + Discussion (Session 10B)
11:15 AM - 11:40 AMBiography
Ralph Holmes has been largely involved in mineral processing research and managed CSIRO’s iron ore processing team for more than 20 years. He is also an international expert in sampling mineral commodities and has organised technical conferences with The AusIMM. He initiated the AusIMM Iron Ore Conference series, chairing ten conferences in Perth and Fremantle since 2002. He also chaired a number of sampling conferences as well as the International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC) in Brisbane in September 2010. More recently Ralph co-chaired the IMPC Asia-Pacific Regional Conference in Melbourne in August 2022 and the AusIMM Iron Ore conference in Perth in September 2023.
