Biography

Jenny Selway has over 20 years’ experience as an engineer and non-executive director, with expertise in decarbonisation and the energy transition. She is currently the CEO of the Heavy Industry Low-carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT CRC), a collaborative venture that brings industry, universities and government organisations together to identify, accelerate and de-risk decarbonisation pathways for heavy industry. Prior to this, Jenny worked across the energy industry at the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), where she focused on increasing renewable penetration in the Victorian transmission network, and at ExxonMobil, specialising in international joint venture and asset management. She is also currently a non-executive director at Gippsland Water. Originally graduating from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) and Bachelor of Science, Jenny is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of Engineers Australia. She has completed an Executive MBA from Melbourne Business School and postgraduate studies into Climate Change Policy at the Australian National University.

Biography

Catherine Turnbull is the WA Program Research and Engagement Lead for The Superpower Institute, a non-profit, independent think tank focused on the economic and climate benefits of Australia’s Superpower opportunities such as green iron. Catherine has worked across renewable energy and sustainability policy with the Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA and State government. Prior to this, she spent her early career working as a mineral exploration geologist in Australia and Africa.

Impact of gangue in Australian iron ore on green steelmaking

Biography

Dr. Shabnam Sabah is a Postdoctoral Research Engineer at Swinburne University of Technology. She is currently involved in HILT CRC funded projects focused on the prevention of sticking in H2 fluidised bed DRI production and de-risking of electric smelting furnaces for Australian ores. She is also leading the project on de-risking flash reduction of Australian iron ore. She has previously worked in projects focusing on the impact of hydrogen DRI on melting in an electric furnace and hydrogen Ironmaking. She has expertise in steelmaking, ironmaking, fluid mechanics and pyro-metallurgy. She earned her PhD from Swinburne University, where she investigated splashing behaviour in the Basic Oxygen Furnace. Dr. Sabah also holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and has prior professional experience in the process industries.

Biography

Jerry (Jeremiah) Frewen has worked within the mining industry across 17 years in a variety or roles across the gold and iron ore industry of Western Australia. Jerry attained a bachelor’s degree from the Western Australian School of Mines as well as a master’s degree from the University of New South Wales. Jerry is currently the Manager Site Support at Mining Area C for BHP having been with the company for 15 years where he has led both operational and technical teams. Outside of work, Jerry is on the board of Glass Jar Australia which runs an initiative called Shooting Stars that empowers Aboriginal Girls and Women across Western Australia and South Australia
