Rebecca Dixon
Principal Geotechnical Engineer
BHP
Session 2b | Session Chair
Biography
Rebecca Dixon has worked in large scale open pit and underground mining operations, and corporate functions within Nickel, Gold and Iron Ore commodities. Rebecca has extensive experience in geotechnical design, risk and hazard identification, system development and implementation for operational risk management, and geotechnical slope monitoring systems and analysis. In collaboration with Mining, Technology and vendor teams, she currently focuses on developing standardised, fit for purpose, innovative methods for effective geotechnical risk management across BHPs WAIO assets.
Dr John Player
Director
MineGeoTech
30 years of seismic system design, implementation and interpretation
11:10 AM - 11:30 AMBiography
Dr Player was trained in mining and geotechnical engineering and has 30 years of industrial and research experience. This covers a broad and applied knowledge base in areas of mine engineering (production and planning), mine design (method selection and layouts), geotechnical assessments (rock mass classification and variability in seismic and non-seismic environments) for mine excavations (entry and non-entry). John has worked as a site-based mining and geotechnical engineer, a researcher and as a consultant. He is the owner and Principal Engineer of the consulting company MineGeoTech – Engineering advice grounded in rigorous data analysis, enabling robust design.
Nicholas Kerr
Principal – Hot Ground Mining
Newcrest Mining Limited
A quantitative risk assessment tool for geothermal outbursts at Lihir Gold Mine
11:30 AM - 11:50 AMBiography
Mr Nicholas Kerr is a project Manager with 16 years local and international professional experience in the civil and mining industries, including 6 years with Newcrest’s Lihir Gold Mine. Currently managing a portfolio of risk mitigation projects related to geothermal activity and mining interaction. While having had a strong geotechnical engineering focus, Nicholas’ roles have also covered civil construction, drill & blast, geology and more recently project management.
Ian Gray
Managing Director
Sigra Pty Ltd
Outbursts, coalbursts and rockbursts
11:50 AM - 12:10 PMBiography
Ian is an engineer whose work covers geomechanics and ground fluids from a civil, mining and petroleum engineering perspective. He has previously worked in private and government roles. In 1994 he established Sigra in Brisbane and since then has taken it to an international firm which has operated in 14 countries and has two international branches. Sigra supplies field and laboratory services, designs mines, and makes equipment. Ian has written more than 80 papers and holds 20 patents.

Dr Selahattin Akdag
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
UNSW Sydney
Dynamic fracture mechanism of thermally degraded brittle rock during strain burst
12:30 PM - 12:50 PMBiography
Sela Akdag is a postdoctoral research fellow at the School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering of UNSW. He obtained his PhD from the School of Civil, Env & Mining Engineering at the University of Adelaide in 2019. Prior to joining UNSW, he worked as a postdoc focusing on rock/coal burst projects and in-situ stress measurement methods. His research interests focus on rock/coal burst analysis for deep mining activities, numerical modelling in underground mining, rock/fracture mechanics and ground support.
