Associate Professor
UNSW Sydney

Session 4b | Session Chair

Biography

Joung Oh is an Associate Professor in the School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering experienced, mainly in United States and Australia, on rock mechanics, tunnelling support system, and numerical modelling. Currently, he teaches and researches primarily in the area of mining geomechanics. His research interests include tunnelling and underground space development, coupled behaviour of rock discontinuities, ground-structure interaction, and rock mechanics for caving mechanism. He completed his PhD degree in civil engineering with emphasis on geotechnical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining UNSW in 2013, he was employed at Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) in New York City, US as a professional (registered) engineer.

Aligning large excavations to the rock stress tensor

4:20 PM - 4:40 PM

Biography

Peter Hills has worked in underground mining operations in Australia and Papua New Guinea since 1982. Originally a geologist, he progressively moved into geotechnical engineering after completing his Masters' degree in 1992. His most recent mine appointment was at Beaconsfield where he spent a number of years developing procedures for seismic management. Peter joined pitt&sherry ten years ago after closure of the mine at Beaconsfield and has worked in most states of Australia over that period, focussing on rockmass characterisation and support design, vertical development, instrumentation, seismic management and ground control management plans, and risk assessment.
