Workshop | Decarbonisation Options for Steel
Date: Monday 22 June 2026Time: 10:00am – 4:00pm (AWST)Catering: Refreshments and light lunch providedWorkshop Overview: This course is designed for staff working in the mining and metallurgical industry who would like to better understand the decarbonisation options facing the steel industry. The course does not assume a metallurgical background. The course will cover the current processes for steel production, combustion and reduction of iron ores, consider the different ways hydrogen could be used to replace carbon in iron and steel production but also examine other options not involving hydrogen. Fundamental and techno-economic aspects of these options will be discussed, as well as some of the s ocial/political implications of decarbonisation. The course will take four hours with another hour provided for discussion of the implications to the Australian scenario. Lecture notes will be provided for attendees.
• Topic 1: Decarbonisation Challenges and Options facing Steel Producers
• Topic 2: Current Steelmaking Processes
• Topic 3: Hydrogen usage in Blast Furnace and DRI Processes
• Topic 4: Decarbonisation Options Outside Hydrogen Reduction
• Topic 5: Summary of the Likely Scenarios
• Topic 6: Discussion of the Implications in the Australian Context
