X-ray based technologies for geometallurgical characterisation

11:00 AM - 11:15 AM

Abstract

Biography

Nathan Fox is a geologist with particular interest in ore forming systems from their formation and exploration, to extraction and mineral processing. Nathan completed his undergraduate degree at the Royal School of Mines at Imperial College before carrying out his PHD at CODES, University of Tasmania where he has worked as a post doctoral fellow for 8 years. Nathan has recently moved to the W.H Bryan Mining and Geology Research Centre at the University of Queensland.

Automated identification of sulphides from drill core imagery

11:15 AM - 11:30 AM

Abstract

Biography

Matthew J. Cracknell graduated from the University of Tasmania with a PhD in Computational Geophysics in 2014. His thesis focused on the use of data mining and machine learning techniques to identify and analyse patterns in high-dimensional geological, geophysical and geochemical data. Specific attention was placed on generating useful outputs such as robust measures of uncertainty and the development of methods for interpreting inferred relationships. Matthew is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Earth Informatics at the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Transforming the Mining Value Chain (TMVC). He also lectures undergraduate and postgraduate students at the School of Natural Sciences (Earth Sciences). Currently, Matthew is researching novel approaches to adding value to digital scans of drill core, specifically the automated detection, extraction and classification of geological features. His research has far reaching implications for ore deposit characterisation, and geometallurgical and geoenvironmental applications.
