Biography

Rob Smillie is Head of Department for GNS Science, based out of their Dunedin office. He is a geologist with over 25 years experience in mineral exploration and mining with a number of companies throughout the Australasia and Asia-Pacific Region, including WMC Resources and Oceana Gold. Most recently he was Near-Mine Exploration Manager with Ok Tedi Mining In Papua New Guinea.

Biography

Adam Martin is a senior scientist with GNS Science in New Zealand. He specialises in magmatic petrology and geochemistry, and the movement of chemicals through the near-surface environment. He has worked as an exploration geologist or research scientist on rocks from all continents, with current interests in Zealandia and Antarctica.

Biography

Geologist of training, with research experience in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, as well as experience with exploration in Australia and New Zealand. Trained originally in Denmark and Norway, he has post-doctorates in oceanic palaeoclimatology from the US, and worked with research logistics for IODP in Japan as well as for the US Antarctic Program. Has worked for Kenex since 2011, focussing on geology and mineral potential modelling in 2D and 3D. Projects include heavy mineral sands on the New Zealand west coast, phosphate on Chatham Rise, and gold projects in Australia.

Increasing accessibility and interoperability of New Zealand geoscience information for mineral exploration

Abstract

Biography

Mark is a research leader with GNS Science. After graduating from Auckland and Otago universities he spent six years involved in geological mapping in Australia. Since returning to NZ in 1993 Mark has been a key contributor to the national QMAP 1:250 000 geological map and successor projects. He now focuses on the management and delivery of geoscience information, in part through leadership roles in international standards group activities and GNS Science’s Nationally Significant Databases and Collections.
