Biography

Janine first joined the AusIMM in 1991 and was admitted as a Fellow in 2009. She was elected to the AusIMM Board in 2013, re-elected for a second term in 2015 and was announced as the AusIMM President for 2019 during Congress in April 2018. Janine has a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Queensland. She has more than 25 years’ experience in the resources industry, encompassing executive management, consulting, technical and production roles, across base metals, uranium, precious metals and industrial minerals. Janine believes the strength of AusIMM lies in the diversity of multidisciplinary membership and geographical locations, including the regional branches and specialty societies. She is a keen ambassador for the AusIMM upholding itself as ‘the trusted voice’, for re-establishing the relevance of AusIMM to all industry professionals and continuing the work already underway via AusIMM’s Future Directions strategy.

The Social License to Operate: adoption and application in the mining sector, 1997-2017

Biography

Ian Thomson has more than 40 years of experience in the mining industry, working for the last two decades to advance and refine the management of social issues in resource development projects. He has led development of new standards and guidelines for good practice management of social issues during mineral exploration, facilitated construction of the Principles and Guidance for Responsible Exploration for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, and has been a prime mover in developing both the concept and metrics of the Social License to Operate. The book, ‘The Social License: The story of the San Cristobal mine’, product of his collaboration with Robert Boutilier, was published by Routledge in September 2018. Ian is Principal of Shinglespit Consultants Inc., prior to that he was a founding member and principal of On Common Ground Consultants Inc. and held management positions with Orvana Minerals Corp and Placer Development Ltd.

The devolution of the social licence to operate in the Australian mining industry

Biography

Associate Professor David Laurence is the founding Director of the Australian Centre for Sustainable Mining Practices at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. He is a mining engineer with significant operational and regulatory experience in surface and underground mining for both metals and coal. He is a former mine manager and chief inspector of mines who has worked for the last 30 years in the area of sustainable mining practices and CSR. In recent years he has worked extensively in Asia, particularly in the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, India and China as well as Africa and Latin America. He is the author of numerous scientific publications particularly in the areas of mine closure, environmental management and safety and risk in mines. He was the lead author of the Guide to Leading Practice for Sustainable Development in the Mining Industry. He continues his work at the University particularly in the management and sustainable development areas.
