Trends in Social License to Operate: the North American experience

Dr Deborah J. Shields received a Ph.D. in Ecosystem Science from Colorado State University (1997) and a MSc. in Mineral Economics from Colorado School of Mines (1985). She is a Faculty Affiliate in the Dept. of Economics at Colorado State University and a Visiting Professor at the Polytechnic University of Turin, IT, in the Dept. of Land, Environment and Infrastructure Engineering. She previously worked for the US Government, first with the US Bureau of Mines and later with the U.S. Forest Service, Research and Development Division. In the latter position she directed the agency’s mineral policy research program. Her research foci are minerals in sustainable development, mineral policy, and integrated sustainability assessments. Dr Shields has led or worked on research for, and been a consultant to, the European Commission and the US government. She has run and participated in NATO funded science projects, co-organized and taught workshops and short courses, and participated in the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development process representing the World Federation of Engineering Organizations. She has published over 100 peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters and conference papers, and regularly reviews papers for various journals.

Off-Earth mining in the context of sustainable development

Jessica Dallas is a PhD researcher in mining engineering at the University of New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia. She received a Masters with first class honours in geochemistry and a BSc in geology from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand followed by a PGcert in environmental management from the Open University, UK. Subsequently she worked in research at the Centre for Star and Planet Formation in Copenhagen, Denmark and the Institut de Physique du Paris, France. Her research interests are space resources, off-Earth mining and environmental management, a combination of which are the focus of her PhD research.

Prof. Gurdeep Singh is the founder member of the Centre of Mining Environment (CME) and Dept. of Environmental Science & Engg. (ESE) at ISM, Dhanbad. He started the unique academic programs : M.Tech in Environmental Science & Engineering (1990) and B.Tech in Environmental Engineering (2006). He has about 28 years of Teaching, Research, HRD/Consultancy. He has completed 17 R&D projects sponsored by MOEF, MHRD including 7 World Bank aided projects, , etc. He has published over 300 Research papers, edited 9 books and guided 25 PhDs students. He is at the forefront of cutting edge research in mitigating environmental and social impacts of mining in India. He has carried out various R&D and Consultancy projects particularly World Bank aided Projects of MOEF/GOI and Coal India Limited on Environmental Management Capacity Building for Mining Sector. Currently Building the Social & Environmental Management Capacity of Afghanistan and Nigeria Mineral Sectors under World Bank aided Project. He has organised over 100 Executive Development Programs on various Mining Environmental aspects with training of over 1500 personnel of mining sector. He is also the coordinator of MOEF Sponsored Environmental Information System on Mining (MIN-ENVIS) catering the requirements of various stakeholders while maintaining & operating the website and publication of various Newsletters and Monographs.
