Biography

Andrew Chaplyn is Director Mines Safety in the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, Safety Regulation Group. He has spent more than 30 years working in the mining industry, from a graduate mining engineer through to senior leadership roles in both private industry and government. Andrew joined DMIRS in 2009 and has been a key driver of mine safety reforms during this time. As State Mining Engineer, Andrew is also responsible for administering the provisions of the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994. This includes managing the State’s mine safety inspectorate, approving key mining submissions, chairing the Board of Examiners and the Mines Survey Board, and is a member of the Mining Industry Advisory Committee and Commission for Occupational Safety and Health.

Michael is Associate Professor of Mining Engineering at Federation University. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and a PhD from the University of Nottingham. Major research interests include; Mine ventilation, heat and mine climate, blasting and numerous other areas, he has also undertaken a wide range of consultancies in a number of countries.

Dr Martin Griffith is an engineer and developer at Howden Ventsim in Brisbane Australia. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and fluid dynamics and has over 12 year's experience working with numerical simulation on a range of engineering topics. He has been with VentSim for 2.5 years, working on simulation methods, new applications and training.
