Can old tailings disposals become mineral resources? A Portuguese case study

3:35 PM - 3:45 PM

Abstract

Biography

Janine Figueiredo is a Ph.D. student in Mining Engineering and Geo-Resources at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, in Portugal. She graduated in Mining Engineering at School of Mines, at the Federal University of Ouro Preto, Brazil (2014). During her graduation, has the opportunity to participate in two projects of initiation scientific research that peaked into a proceeding in a Latin-American conference, about water resources management. Her final work for the undergraduate was analyzed a feasibility study of an underground mine in Brazil and propose a new exploitation method. In 2015, she started her research at a Geotechnical laboratory in Civil Department. Over one year, she worked with mining tailings, executed some geotechnical characterization tests, and frequented some classes in the Master of Geotechnical Engineering. In 2016, she has started her Ph.D., her subject intends to compare solutions to minimize the impacts generated in the environment by mining tailings. The analysis considers an integrated assessment with simultaneously technical, environmental, economic and social components in a tailings reprocessing project. As a research fellowship, at National Council of Technological and Scientific Development (Brazil), she has been publishing proceedings conference and some full paper in journals. Her main interest is in tailings management, algorithms optimization, mining processing and geo-resources.
