Enhancing Quality Assurance in the Construction of Tailings Storage Facilities through Automated Workflows

11:10 AM - 11:20 AM

Abstract

Biography

Martin Rojas joined Red Earth Engineering in 2024 as a geotechnical engineer, focusing on Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) for tailings storage facilities (TSFs) in Western Australia. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering and a Master’s in Engineering Sciences from Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM) in Chile, and is currently completing a Graduate Certificate in Tailings Management at the University of Western Australia (UWA). Before joining Red Earth, Martin spent over three years in a transport engineering consultancy, primarily working on vehicular and pedestrian flow analysis and microsimulation of transportation networks. During his master’s studies, he focused on numerical modelling of airblast hazards in underground mining. Additionally, as an undergraduate engineer, he worked on slope stability assessments for leach pad wastes. In Australia, he has contributed to tailings dam stability projects, including stability analysis for rapid drawdown scenarios, probabilistic stability analysis, data analysis, and the implementation of GISTM guidelines. His work integrates automated workflows to improve efficiency and decision-making in mining infrastructure projects.

The role of Critical Controls in Safe Tailings Management

11:20 AM - 11:30 AM

Abstract

Biography

MEng (Civil), GDp (Metallurgy), BSc (Adv)(Hons) Hydrology, CPEng NER IntET (Aus), RPEQ, MAusIMM Principal Engineer – Geotechnics and Mine Waste Engineering Jodie demonstrates a record of high achievement within both technical and mining operational environments over her 10 years of experience. Jodie has a strong foundation in tailings and water management, with experience ranging from the direct operation of tailings facilities (and water dams) to the coordination of engineering assessments and dam designs. Jodie has experience in the technical review of dam facilities through dam safety reviews, integrity inspections, and remedial designs. Jodie has experience with leading a team of tailings and water dam engineers, with a key goal to translate technical information into an operational language (to allow successful implementation of industry best practice for dams). Jodie is proficient in risk management tools, critical controls, and procedures in the context of water and tailings dam infrastructure. Jodie undertakes a multidisciplinary approach to tailings and dam management, also containing experience in mine water management, including water balance modelling through the use of Goldsim, Flood modelling (TuFLOW), and GIS packages.
