Biography

Professor Colin Roberts FAusIMM(CP), practices as an International Resources Geo‐strategist. He is a Chartered Petroleum Engineer, Chartered Mining Engineer, Chartered Scientist, Resources & Investment Legal Academic, International Commercial and Investment Arbitrator, Accredited International Commercial Mediator, Adjudicator, Expert Determiner and Dispute Board Member, with over 40 years of Multi-disciplinary resource industry experience, most of which has been in the developing world. Colin is also a Professor at WASM: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering, Curtin University, and his current project is in Somaliland, Somalia. Professor Roberts has spent most of his working life in the developing world and now specializes in dispute resolution, mitigation of sovereign risk, advising governments in resources law and policy and facilitation of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the resources, energy and infrastructure sectors.

Biography

Dave has almost 30 years' experience in the minerals sector, in geotechnical engineering site-based positions with Newcrest Mining and Rio Tinto, and almost 20 years in various senior consulting/leadership roles with GHD. In addition to Chairing the Mining Society committee in the past and serving on the Melbourne Branch Committee, Dave led a reinvigoration of the Darwin Branch and Chaired this until the end of 2013. Dave was first elected to the AusIMM Board in October 2015, and in April 2020 was elected AusIMM President for 2021. Dave has brought additional governance to the group in risk management and project management fundamentals. He has served on various Board committees and taskforces including the Audit and Risk Committee, the Nominations Committee and the Professional Accreditation Advisory Taskforce to review and revamp the Chartered Professional Program to be more contemporary, user-friendly and have greater oversight.

Biography

Andrew Deeks was appointed to Murdoch University from University College Dublin (UCD), where he was the first Australian and only second non-Irish person to lead an Irish university. He was appointed President of UCD in January 2014 and developed a strategy which led to significant improvements across a range of areas, including student satisfaction; quality, quantity, and impact of research; and local, national, and international engagement. Prior to his role at UCD, he was a Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Durham University, where he led the Science, Engineering and Technology division and contributed to the development of extensive international and industry partnerships. Before joining Durham, he was the Winthrop Professor in Civil and Resources Engineering at The University of Western Australia and was Head of School from 2004 to 2009. Professor Deeks’ research has focused on structural dynamics, mechanics and dynamic soil structure and he has published more than 150 research papers in this area.

Biography

The Hon. Bill Johnston is Western Australia's Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Energy, Corrective Services and Industrial Relations. He has been a Minister for the McGowan Labor Government since March 2017, and was previously Minister for Commerce, Electoral Affairs, and Asian Engagement. So far, his achievements include cutting red-tape for the mining industry, introducing the Work Health and Safety Bill (industrial manslaughter provisions) and assisting in revolutionising Western Australia’s energy system. In Opposition he served as Shadow Minister for State Development and Energy from 2012, and Shadow Minister for Mines and Petroleum from 2013. He was a Member of the Economics and Industry Standing Committee and Deputy Chair of the Inquiry into Domestic Gas Prices from 2010 to 2011. Prior to entering Parliament, he was the State Secretary of WA Labor from 2001 until 2008, with responsibility for all State and Federal election campaigns.

Matt joined IGO in 2014 and was appointed Chief Operating Officer in early 2018, and prior to that was Chief Growth Officer. Matt has over 25 years’ experience in all facets of the industry including exploration, resource development, technical studies, corporate development, public markets, operations, and executive leadership. Matt has previously held senior management positions within PMI Gold, Gold Fields and WMC Resources. Matt has extensive global experience, having worked in Australia, South America, Africa and Asia.

Abstract

Biography

Maggie is the Director for the National Battery Testing Centre & Associated Projects at QUT and the Project Lead for the Future Battery Industries CRC funded Electrochemical Testing of Li-ion Battery Materials. She has a PhD in chemistry, specialising in Li-ion battery materials and heterogeneous catalysis. Maggie has over seventeen years of industrial experience in renewable energy storage systems, applications and materials. In commercial, technical and management roles Maggie has been a driver of innovation, and a gatekeeper for mass production trials into the EV value chain. Maggie has also overseen testing and qualification of raw materials and hardware deliverables to NASA, US Airforce, US Army, US DoE and US NSF.
