Biography

Andrew has over 30 years of experience in the minerals industry, across a range of technical, operational and strategic leadership roles. He completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) from Melbourne University in 1987, and an MBA at Melbourne Business School in 1996. Following employment as a Senior Research Engineer with Comalco Ltd (now Rio Tinto Aluminium) from 1988-1996, he worked for WMC Resources Ltd from 1997-2005 in a number of strategic and operational management roles. Andrew re-joined Rio Tinto in 2006 as GM Technology for the Iron Ore product group, before moving into Rio Tinto’s corporate Technology & Innovation group, as GM Innovation and then Director Partnerships. While working for Rio Tinto, he also served as a director on the Boards of CRC Mining and the Parker Centre. In 2020, Andrew joined CSIRO as Research Director – Mineral Processing.

Biography

Cyril O'Connor is a chemical engineer with a Ph.D. from the University of Cape Town and a Senior Doctorate in Metallurgical Engineering from Stellenbosch University. He is a registered professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa. He is the founder Director of the Centre for Minerals Research in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town. He was the President of the International Mineral Processing Council (2006-2020), held the Anglo-American Platinum Chair in Minerals Processing (2008-2012), was a member of the Executive of the Academy of Engineering of South Africa (2012-2020) and is CEO of the South African Minerals to Metals Research Institute. He has published over 280 papers, has supervised more than 80 PhD and MSc graduates and at his retirement was a National Research Foundation A rated researcher.

I'm a senior researcher at the University of Limpopo at the Materials Modelling Centre. I do research in computational modelling of sulphides and arsenides minerals and flotation reagents modification and design. The research work involves surface study and adsorption using density functional theory computational methods.

Biography

Yueyi is a PhD student in the School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering at University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. She developed her interest in mineral processing as an undergraduate, and continued her research in this major by exploring an improved processing method of rare earth from tailings in her master’s degree. Yueyi’s current research topic focuses on interplay between frother, collector and salt.

Pulp rheology of fine mineral flotation: a review*

Biography

Dr. Zhang graduated from Kunming University of Science and Technology in mineral processing engineering in 1994. After receiving her Ph.D. degree, Dr. Zhang begun to establish the first underground major in Mineral Processing Engineering in Guizhou Province. Dr. Zhang’s efforts in research and teaching have been focusing on processing and utilization of mineral resources including coal, phosphorus, aluminum, manganese, gold and nonmetal. She has been principle investigators for projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the 863 Program, National Key Technology Research and Development Program, International Science &Technology Cooperation Project, Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China and NSFC-Guizhou Karst Science Research Center. Dr. Zhang has published more than 100 academic papers. She was selected into the list of highly cited Chinese researchers by  Elsevier from 2014 to 2017.

Traversing the valley of death: upscaling the REFLUX™ Flotation Cell

Biography

Kevin Galvin is the inventor of the REFLUX(TM) Classifier used in gravity separation of fine particles. With over 170 installations around the world, the technology has been used to beneficiate coal, iron ore, mineral sands, potash, chromite, and other base metal oxides. He is also the inventor of the REFLUX(TM) Flotation Cell, a new flotation technology which is the subject of this presentation. Kevin Galvin obtained his PhD from Imperial College and is a Laureate Professor at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering and previous recipient of numerous awards including the Antoine Gaudin Award in mineral processing. He is Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Enabling Eco-Efficient Beneficiation of Minerals.
