Dr Graeme Jameson
Professor
The University of Newcastle

Processing 1 | Session Chair

Biography

Laureate Professor Graeme Jameson holds a BSc (UNSW) and a PhD (Cambridge), both in chemical engineering. After leaving Cambridge in 1963, he worked in the oil industry in the US, before joining Imperial College London. In 1978, he returned to Australia as Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Newcastle, where he remains today, as a Distinguished Laureate Professor. His research field is mineral processing, especially flotation. He is best known for the discovery of the Jameson Cell for the mineral and coal industries, which is sold world-wide. To date, the Cell has produced Australian export coal valued at over AU$50 billion. There are over 400 Cells operating throughout the world. Recently, two new cells have been commercialised – the Concorde Cell for ultrafine flotation and the NovaCell for coarse particles. He has received many awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award of the International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC) in 2016, and in 2018, Fellowship of the Royal Society of London, (FRS). He was awarded the President’s Medal of the AusIMM in 1999.
