Dr Miao Chen
Senior Principal Research Scientist
CSIRO

Preconcentration | Session Chair

Biography

Dr Miao Chen is a Senior Principal Research Scientist in CSIRO Mineral Resources and Professor in RMIT University. She leads a multidisciplinary research team from the fields of chemistry, materials science, physics and biology. She has developed a keen interest in the area of complex and low-grade ore processing (Cu, Au, Ni and Uranium), electrochemistry and chemical sensing. Dr Chen has over 165 ISI journal papers published with H index of 34, she holds 23 patents including VESI chemical sensing technology. Her current research is: • in situ characterization of surface and interfacial reactions of refractory and arsenic bearing sulfide minerals during leaching. • Robust solid-state electrochemical sensors for in-situ and continuous industrial environmental monitoring. • Mineral-solution interfacial and surface chemistry (leaching mechanism and kinetics study including Synchrotron techniques). • Low grade and complex ore processing, mine tailing processing, acid mine drainage manages and remediation, and e-waste materials process.

Prof Kevin Galvin
Director, ARC Centre Of Excellence, COEMinerals
The University of Newcastle

Preconcentration | Session Chair

Biography

Kevin Galvin is the inventor of the REFLUX(TM) Classifier used in gravity separation of fine particles. With over 170 installations around the world, the technology has been used to beneficiate coal, iron ore, mineral sands, potash, chromite, and other base metal oxides. He is also the inventor of the REFLUX(TM) Flotation Cell, a new flotation technology which is the subject of this presentation. Kevin Galvin obtained his PhD from Imperial College and is a Laureate Professor at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering and previous recipient of numerous awards including the Antoine Gaudin Award in mineral processing. He is Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Enabling Eco-Efficient Beneficiation of Minerals.

Mr Lindon Pyle
Minerals Processing Engineer
Hatch

Pre-concentration – more than bulk ore sorting

4:10 PM - 4:30 PM

Biography

Lindon is a process engineer with a background in the design and development of minerals processing circuits and metallurgical optimisation. As a key team member within the Mining & Minerals Processing group at Hatch he has developed a fundamental knowledge of effective crushing, grinding, flotation and dewatering circuit design within greenfield concentrators and brownfield expansion projects, across commodities including copper, gold, lithium, coal and nickel. Recently Lindon has worked as a process engineer in the expansion of a large Cu-Au operation from Concept through to Detailed Engineering phases. This involved a throughput increase in the crushing & grinding circuits and upgrades to maintain flotation recovery whilst increasing circuit capacity. This included the application of advanced technologies such as coarse particle flotation, tertiary vertical stirred milling and a Jameson Cell in rougher-scalper duty.
