Biography

Keith Vining has worked for CSIRO Mineral Resources for a period of 17 years in the field of iron ore processing and has broad experience ranging from iron ore process mineralogy, beneficiation and agglomeration as well as the development of alternative strategies and production routes to sustain the Australian iron ore industry in the face of increasing ore complexity and declining grade. In particular, Keith has worked on the development of the ‘Pebble’ process, an internationally patented alternative agglomeration process for Australian iron ores and led the engagement with major clients for the provision of coke making activities as part of a 20 year strategic alliance to support metallurgical coal technical marketing. Keith is currently the Group Leader for the Carbon Steel Materials group within the Processing program and Team Leader for Coke-Making Activities. The Carbon Steel Materials Group undertakes research and development activities to support and sustain Australia’s two largest export commodities applying capability across the value chain for iron ore from characterisation to blast furnace iron making.

Biography

Mr Lilleyman joined Fortescue in January 2017 as Director of Operations and with over 28 years’ experience in the mining sector across multiple commodities including over 20 years in the iron ore sector, has a wealth of industry knowledge and experience. Greg holds a degree in Construction Engineering from Curtin University and has completed the Vincent Fairfax Fellowship in Ethical Leadership at the University of Melbourne as well as the prestigious Wharton Business School’s Advanced Management Program. Mr Lilleyman was a board member and past President of the Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA and has served on the boards of the Australian Institute of Management WA, the Curtin University Foundation and the Energy and Minerals Institute of UWA. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (AIM). With extensive international experience across Australia, India, Japan, China, Canada, USA, Peru, South Africa, Guinea and Mongolia in large scale project development and construction, operational and business leadership, JV management and technology deployment, Greg brings significant business credentials and iron ore market knowledge to the Fortescue leadership team.

Keynote Presentation: Understanding the whole value chain

Biography

Sandra Occhipinti is the Research Director of CSIRO’s minerals discovery program. Her team is focussed on solving the greatest challenges faced in the mineral industry through innovative science and technology. Through multi-disciplinary, collaborative research and development, CSIRO works to find the best solutions to minerals exploration problems we face today, tomorrow and in future. This includes leveraging CSIRO’s Data61 and deep earth imaging capabilities. Sandra is a structural geologist with over 20 years of experience. She has worked across the government, industry and academia sectors – most notably for the Geological Survey of Western Australia, The University of Western Australia and AngloGold Ashanti. Her recent work in mineral systems science included analyses of the Kimberley and Capricorn regions of Western Australia for a range of commodities. She also worked in the Global Greenfields Group with AngloGold Ashanti in project generation for regions throughout Australia, areas in South East Asia and the Americas.

Abstract

Biography

Arvind Misra is an experienced mining engineer with 30 years’ industry experience. He has gained his experience working through small and large mining companies in Australia, Africa and Asia. His broad international experience in the mining industry includes all aspects of mine operations including primary infrastructure to mine development, feasibility study through to new mine development, mine productions and project management. Arvind has been on board of ASX listed Company (India Resources Limited) for 9 years as well as on several unlisted boards (private limited). Arvind has worked on numerous high profile projects for RIO Tinto, Anglo American, BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, LionOre, Mount Isa Mines, Zambia Copper Mines, Griffin Coal, Norseman Gold, Brandrill Limited and India Resources. Currently Arvind is director of Aranak Pty Ltd and advisor to Resolute Mining Ltd, Coolgardie Minerals, IDAT Pty Ltd and JSW Pty Ltd. He advises on recapitalisation / restructuring, feasibility management and Innovation/automation of the open pit drilling rigs.

Keynote Presentation: Using innovation and automation to leverage orebody knowledge across the value chain

Biography

Vanessa started her career as a geologist in 1991 at one of South Africa’s open pit coal mines after graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Geology and Earth Science. She moved on to being a base-metals exploration geologist and then, while finishing her MSc in Exploration Geology, she managed a mineral sands development project before moving to Australia in mid-1998 to complete her PhD. On returning to South Africa in 2002, Vanessa joined Kumba Resources as a senior and then principle mineral resource geologist. She was promoted to Head of Geosciences for Anglo American’s Kumba Iron Ore company in 2006 and then moved into iron ore Business Development in 2011. In late-2013, Vanessa relocated to London to lead Early Studies for Anglo American’s Group Technical and Sustainability function. In early-2017, Hatch Associates appointed her as their Metals and Mining Director for Europe before she joined BHP in March 2018 as Head of Geoscience for Western Australian iron ore. Vanessa has authored/co-authored 11 journal and conference papers and is a Fellow of the Geological Society of South Africa, Society for Economic Geologists and AusIMM. She is a mentor in the International Women in Resources Mentoring Programme.
