Biography

Dr Richard Walley OAM is a Noongar man and one of Australia’s leading Aboriginal performers, musicians and writers. Richard is a working director of his family-owned business, Aboriginal Productions and Promotions, which delivers cultural awareness and learning programs and has been in operation for over 25 years. Richard is a committed leader in the promotion of Noongar culture, and has extensive experience working alongside Australian and international organisations as a cultural consultant and presenter. Richard lectures on Aboriginal culture at UWA and is a regular host and participant at significant public and cultural events in Perth and the South West.

Biography

Bachelors in Chemical Engineering Masters in Metallurgical Engineering PhD in Metallurgical Engineering CPEng, CEng, PrEng, GAICD FIEAust, FAusIMM, FSAIMM, FIChemE Dr Leon Lorenzen has more than 34 years in-depth experience in mineral processing, electrochemistry, reactive systems, hydrometallurgy, waste treatment and biofuels particularly with regard to application of these technologies in the process industries. This includesmineral processing industries such as mineral processing engineer (Anglo American) and more recently as Innovation Project Manager, Metallurgical Manager (BHP Billiton), Group General Manager (Snowden) as well as Executive Consultant (Mintrex) and Deputy Dean, Chairman and Professor of Chemical en Metallurgical Engineering at Stellenbosch University.

Biography

Janine first joined the AusIMM in 1991 and was admitted as a Fellow in 2009. She was elected to the AusIMM Board in 2013, re-elected for a second term in 2015 and was announced as the AusIMM President for 2019 during Congress in April 2018. Janine has a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Queensland. She has more than 25 years’ experience in the resources industry, encompassing executive management, consulting, technical and production roles, across base metals, uranium, precious metals and industrial minerals. Janine believes the strength of AusIMM lies in the diversity of multidisciplinary membership and geographical locations, including the regional branches and specialty societies. She is a keen ambassador for the AusIMM upholding itself as ‘the trusted voice’, for re-establishing the relevance of AusIMM to all industry professionals and continuing the work already underway via AusIMM’s Future Directions strategy.

Plenary Presentation: Underground mining: we are just scratching the surface

Abstract

Biography

Mr Beament is a mining engineer from the Western Australian School of Mines, with more than 20 years’ experience in the resource sector. This includes several senior management positions and a strong emphasis on underground mining, in which he is a widely-acknowledged specialist. He has led the growth of Northern Star from a 1¢ shell to an ASX100 company with a market cap of A$8 billion (US$5.5 billion). This growth has been driven by a combination of acquisitions, including the Paulsens, Jundee and Kalgoorlie mines in Western Australia, and the Pogo mine in North America, operational excellence and aggressive exploration programs at and around these assets. This strategy has resulted in NST generating one of the highest returns on equity of any ASX-listed company including the industrial sector. This reflects the Company's philosophy that it is a business first and a mining company second.

Biography

Simon Hille is the Group Executive – Technical Engineering in the Global Projects group for Newmont Goldcorp. A metallurgical professional with over 25 years’ experience in gold and base metals specializing in maximizing value from complex ore bodies. As Group Executive – Technical Engineering, Simon is accountable for delivering step-change innovation to our multiple, highly complex, highly visible projects that have an immediate and long-term business impact. Simon acts as a change agent responsible for leading innovative change within the organization to ensure a coordinated approach to development and application, ensuring that Newmont Goldcorp’s mine sites can rapidly adapt to and adopt new technologies to achieve process and business efficiencies at the mine site level and realize value, and help Newmont Goldcorp lead its industry peers in innovation deployment. He is currently a Board member of CEEC (Coalition for Eco-Efficient Comminution) since 2015, the Energy & Processing Chair for Canadian Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) since 2016 and recently invited to join the ICMM Tailings Aspirational goal working group member 2018 along with a technical board role in the Bradshaw Research Initiative for Minerals and Mining (BRIMM).
