Biography

Bachelors in Chemical Engineering Masters in Metallurgical Engineering PhD in Metallurgical Engineering CPEng, CEng, PrEng, GAICD FIEAust, FAusIMM, FSAIMM, FIChemE Dr Leon Lorenzen has more than 34 years in-depth experience in mineral processing, electrochemistry, reactive systems, hydrometallurgy, waste treatment and biofuels particularly with regard to application of these technologies in the process industries. This includesmineral processing industries such as mineral processing engineer (Anglo American) and more recently as Innovation Project Manager, Metallurgical Manager (BHP Billiton), Group General Manager (Snowden) as well as Executive Consultant (Mintrex) and Deputy Dean, Chairman and Professor of Chemical en Metallurgical Engineering at Stellenbosch University.

Abstract

Biography

Jim is a Mining Engineer with a broad range of strategic, operating and start-up experience encompassing 30 years across a number of commodities including gold, copper, uranium, lead, zinc and iron ore. He has extensive gold industry experience having been the General Manager of the Boddington Gold Mine, one of Australia’s largest gold mines, from 2007 to 2010 and General Manager of the Pajingo Gold Mine from 2004 to 2006. Prior to joining Regis Resources Jim was the Chief Executive Officer of Western Australian based iron ore producer and explorer Mt Gibson Iron Limited (ASX: MGX) from 2011 to 2018. Jim holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) degree, a Master of Geoscience (Mineral Economics) and is Vice President of the Association of Mining & Exploration Companies (AMEC) Executive Council.

Keynote Presentation: Technology in the gold industry: why the future will still need people

Biography

Dr Vanessa Guthrie is a highly accomplished Executive and Director with a career spanning thirty years in the resources sector, in diverse roles across gold, base metals, aluminium, oil and gas and uranium projects and operations. Vanessa has qualifications in geology, environment, law and business management including a PhD in Geology. She was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science from Curtin University in 2017 for her contribution to sustainability, innovation and policy leadership in the resources industry. Vanessa is the Chair of the Minerals Council of Australia, Deputy Chair of the WACA, a Non-Executive Director of Santos Limited, Adelaide Brighton Limited, Vimy Resources Limited and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Council Member of Curtin University. She is an active member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and Chief Executive Women (CEW), and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE). In 2013, Vanessa was recognised by the mining industry as the Outstanding Professional Woman from the WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy and was one of the world’s Top 100 list of inspirational women in mining globally.
