Biography

Bachelors in Chemical Engineering Masters in Metallurgical Engineering PhD in Metallurgical Engineering CPEng, CEng, PrEng, GAICD FIEAust, FAusIMM, FSAIMM, FIChemE Dr Leon Lorenzen has more than 34 years in-depth experience in mineral processing, electrochemistry, reactive systems, hydrometallurgy, waste treatment and biofuels particularly with regard to application of these technologies in the process industries. This includesmineral processing industries such as mineral processing engineer (Anglo American) and more recently as Innovation Project Manager, Metallurgical Manager (BHP Billiton), Group General Manager (Snowden) as well as Executive Consultant (Mintrex) and Deputy Dean, Chairman and Professor of Chemical en Metallurgical Engineering at Stellenbosch University.

Plenary Presentation: Accelerating innovation in the gold mining sector

Biography

Ms Elizabeth Lewis-Gray is co-founder and Chairman of Gekko Systems, a world leader in gold and silver processing technology, and energy (processing) efficient modular plants, designing, construction and operation. Ms Lewis-Gray was the founding Chair of the Federal Government’s Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) Growth Centre and was previously Chair of Austmine, the peak industry body in Australia for the mining equipment, technology and services (METS) sector, a $90 billion industry. Elizabeth was a member of the Australian Federal Government’s National Precincts Board and the Innovation Australia Board. Founder and now Patron of CEEC (Coalition for Eco-Efficient Comminution), Elizabeth was visionary in the formation of this not-for-profit organisation which aims to accelerate knowledge and change transfer in the field of eco-efficient comminution. In 2016, Federation University Australia honoured Elizabeth with a Doctor of the University Honoris Causa degree in recognition of service and contributions to the mining sector, mineral processing, business leadership, and environmental management.

Biography

Professor Jacques Eksteen is the Chair for Extractive Metallurgy within the Western Australian School of Mines: Minerals, Energy & Chemical Engineering, at Curtin University. He is the Director of the Gold Technology Group and project manager of the AMIRA P420 projects (on Gold Processing Technology) since 2012. Jacques has 24 years’ experience in industry and academia and has worked in the fields of precious, base, ferrous and energy metals and performed research, development, process design, piloting and consulting in these fields. Jacques has authored or co-authored around 200 peer-reviewed publications (journals, book chapters and conference proceedings). He is a listed co-inventor on 7 patent families in the areas of precious and base metals processing. He maintains strong links with industry and focuses on industry demand-driven research and development.
