Biography

Hooman Askari-Nasab is a Professor of Mining Engineering at the University of Alberta and Director of the Mining Optimization Laboratory (MOL). His research focuses on applying operations research and advanced analytical methods to solve complex, large-scale mine planning and operational decision-making problems. He develops mathematical models, optimization frameworks, discrete-event and continuous simulation tools, and intelligent agent-based systems to produce optimal or near-optimal solutions for strategic and operational mining challenges.

Biography

A R Wilogo is a mining engineer with experience in open pit mine planning and operational optimisation within contractor-based nickel mining environments in Indonesia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering and has been involved in short- to medium-term planning, haulage optimisation, equipment productivity analysis and cost control initiatives. His professional focus includes improving operational stability through structured sequencing, fleet configuration assessment and production variability reduction. Wilogo has worked closely with site operations teams to align tactical execution with strategic mine planning objectives, particularly in high-tonnage laterite nickel operations. His recent work explores the integration of semi-fixed conveyor systems into open pit haulage strategies to enhance cost predictability and long-term project value. He is interested in strategic mine planning, operational transformation and value optimisation frameworks that improve consistency and sustainability in surface mining operations

Dimitar Kaykov is currently a PhD student at McGill University. He holds mining engineering degrees from the University of Mining and Geology in Sofia, Bulgaria. Mustafa Kumral is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering at McGill University. He has over 20 years of experience in mining engineering research and teaching in Canada, the United Kingdom and Turkey. He obtained his PhD from the Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering at the University of Leeds
