Biography

Johanna Cowell is a mining engineer based in Perth and currently working at BHP Western Australia Iron Ore. Johanna has worked in metalliferous open cut and underground operations across a range of commodities and mining companies. In this time Johanna has led production, technical, project operational readiness and strategic planning teams. Like all mining engineers, from graduating until today, Johanna has held responsibilities for managing atmospheric, geotechnical, vehicular and many other health and safety risks from early design through to monitoring and response.

Biography

Tobias is a 2025 New Professionals Network Ambassador for Queensland, member of the AusIMM Southern QLD Branch Committee, Secretary of the AusIMM Southern QLD Student Chapter and final year thesis student at the University of Queensland. Completing his Bachelor of Engineering, majoring in Mining at UQ, Tobias has gained a diverse range of work experience throughout his undergraduate career. During the summers of 2022, 2023, and 2024, he completed placements in underground coal, underground metals, and open-cut coal operations respectively. In 2024, he was elected as president of the AusIMM Southern Qld Student Chapter and served as principal organiser of the 2024 National Mining Games held in Brisbane. He also served on the advisory committee for the 2024 New Leaders Summit and this year sits on both advisory committees for the 2025 New Leaders Summit and APAC Mining Games. Before his role as president, Tobias also served as the Vice President of both the chapter and UQ’s Mining and Metallurgical Student Association (MAMA) throughout 2023. As he approaches the completion of his degree, Tobias aims to deepen his understanding of mine planning and mine process optimisation.

Biography

Janina is a final-year chemical engineering honours student at Curtin University with a particular passion for the mining industry. As the 2024/25 president of the AusIMM Curtin Student Chapter, she leads initiatives to inspire more students to pursue a career in mining and strengthen collaboration between new professionals and industry leaders. She has gained invaluable experience in the mining sector through her engagement in several student club committees and internships. These opportunities have not only allowed her to deepen her technical knowledge and develop practical skills but have also sparked her interest in the industry and her commitment to advancing sustainable practices in mining and metallurgy.

Hamish is a final year mining engineering student at the university of New South Wales. He has completed two vacation programs in underground gold mining operations across NSW and WA. Next year he is moving to Kalgoorlie to begin his graduate program with Northern Star Resources.

Biography

Aidan is a final-year Mining Engineering (Honours) student at The University of Western Australia, graduating in November 2025. He has 20 months of industry experience with Liontown Resources at the Kathleen Valley project, where he contributes to mining operations, drill and blast, and project planning. Aidan is also actively involved in the AusIMM UWA Student Chapter and the Mining Games. In January 2026, he will commence his career as a Graduate Mining Engineer with Genesis Minerals.
