Speaker
Mr Matt Samson
Manager, Resource Geology
Barrick Gold
Preg-robbing gold ores: an example of a non-linear estimation workflow when dealing with non-additive geometallurgical variables
1:00 PM - 1:20 PMBiography
Matt is currently the Resource Geology Manager for Nevada Gold Mines chiefly responsible for all open pit deposit models, as well as the Carlin and Phoenix Districts.
Dr Oscar Rondon
Principal Geostatistician
Datamine
Estimating Recoverable Resources: is it still hopeless?
1:20 PM - 1:40 PMBiography
Oscar Rondon, FAusIMM, PhD is a skilled geostatistician and researcher with over 18 years of experience
Oscar’s experience comprises Resource Estimation and applications of conditional simulation,Uniform Conditioning, change of support and non-linear techniques within a range of different commodities and mineralisation styles.
Oscar has a strong theoretical background which combined with his working experience has also made him sought after for the customisation, development and presentation of geostatistical training courses worlwide.
Mr Laercio Bertossi
Snr. Resource Geologist
Glencore
DIY – Implementing Customized Python Workflows for Flexible and Effective Mineral Resource Estimation
1:40 PM - 2:00 PMBiography
Mr. Bertossi began his career as a mineral resources geologist in 2008 and has since developed strong expertise in geological interpretation, 3D modeling, and resource estimation. Over the last 3 years, he has been part of the team at the George Fisher Mine (GFM) in Queensland, focusing on integrating geological and grade control models for Glencore.
He has worked in a variety of geological environments, including Cu-Co sedimentary deposits (Copperbelt, Africa), Nb/Ph alkaline-carbonatite complexes, Ni-Co/Al ultramafic complexes, Ni-Cu-Co (PGE) volcanogenic massive sulfides, Zn-Pb-Ag-Cu-Au VMS/SEDEX deposits, and limestone deposits.
With an international career that includes Brazil, Canada, Gabon, the United States, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and most recently, Australia, Mr. Bertossi has gained practical experience in sampling, QA/QC, exploration/infill drilling, ore/grade control, and resource model-to-mine-to-plant reconciliations.
Elaine Ramos
Senior Resource Geologist
Northern Star Resources
Spatial Estimation with Machine Learning of Multiple-Fluid Phase Veining in Shear-Hosted Intrusion-Related Deposits Using Geospatial Features—A Case Study from Pogo Mine, Alaska.
2:00 PM - 2:20 PMBiography
I was born in Manila, Philippines, and earned my BS in Geology from the University of the Philippines in 2014. Early in my career, I gained invaluable experience in a large-scale open-pit nickel operation at Nickel Asia Corporation, where I trained to become a Resource Geologist. In 2018, I relocated to Alaska and expanded my geologic expertise by working in both underground and open-pit gold mines with major operators - Kinross Gold and Northern Star Resources. During this time, I completed my MS in Data Science in just two years while working full-time, demonstrating my dedication and ability to balance demanding responsibilities. My first formal academic training in Resource Estimation came from Clayton Deutsch and I earned a Citation in Applied Geostatistics from the University of Alberta. Currently, I serve as a Senior Resource Geologist at Northern Star Resources, where I bring over a decade of experience in resource estimation and geology.
Outside of work, I’m an endurance cycling athlete and enjoy exploring Alaska’s stunning outdoors. I’m passionate about the intersection of Data Science and Resource Geology, focusing on leveraging cutting-edge data-driven techniques to optimize resource models and unlock new possibilities in the mining sector.
