Dr Clayton Deutsch
Director and Professor, School of Mining Engineering
University of Alberta
KEYNOTE | De-risking projects from mineral resource estimates
3:10 PM - 3:45 PMBiography
Dr. Deutsch is Director and Professor in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of Alberta. He teaches and conducts research into better ways to model variability and uncertainty in mineral deposits. His employment history includes three years as a Research Professor at Stanford University, three years with Exxon Production Research Company and three years of experience with Placer Dome Inc. Dr. Deutsch has published eight books and over three hundred research papers. Dr. Deutsch holds the Alberta Chamber of Resources Industry Chair in Mining Engineering and the Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Natural Resources Uncertainty Characterization.
Jordan McDivitt
Senior Resource Geologist
Evolution Mining
Advances in Geologic and Resource Modelling Methods for Locally-Varying Controls on Orogenic Gold Mineralisation
3:45 PM - 4:05 PMBiography
Jordan is an economic geologist specialised in hydrothermal gold deposits with additional skills in geological modelling and resource estimation. Jordan is currently based at Evolution Mining's Mungari operations and was previously at Newmont's Tanami operations focused on near-mine resource development. He has completed post-graduate studies in economic geology at UWA (PhD) and Laurentian University (MSc) and post-graduate studies in geostatistics at the University of Alberta (Citation). He holds a BSc (hons) degree from UBC and professional registration with the EGBC and the AIG.
Ms Valerie Wilson
Principal Resource Geologist And Technical Discipline Manager Mining Advisory Apac
SLR Consulting Australia Pty Ltd
A practical use of machine learning to aid gold recovery studies at Liberty Gold’s Black Pine Oxide Gold Project in Southern Idaho.
4:05 PM - 4:25 PMBiography
Within the global mining advisory group at SLR, Valerie is focused on team capacity building as well as the preparation and evaluation of geological and resource models for a diverse number of commodity and deposit types. For her clients, she provides technical assistance, composes documentation for public disclosure, and conducts due diligence reviews to support financial transactions. Internally, Valerie provides mentorship and peer review on modelling and geostatistical assignments. Previous to SLR, Valerie held positions in Canada and Scandinavia as a Mine Geologist and as an Exploration Geologist.
Valerie earned her Bachelor of Science in Geology at the University of Victoria, and her M.Sc. in Mining Geology, with a specialization in geostatistics, at the Camborne School of Mines in England.
Valerie has developed and delivered Mineral Resource estimation training to private and public audiences and has been a short course presenter on Mineral Resource estimation at PDAC, Roundup, and for the Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (PGO). She is a Board member of the PDAC and chairs its Convention Planning Committee.

Day 1 Close
5:25 PM - 5:30 PMBiography
René has worked on early-stage, resource development and active mining projects in a wide variety of geological settings, in countries in Africa, Asia, Australasia, North America and Europe, and across multiple commodities. He holds a master’s degree in Structural Geology and Tectonics, and specialises in resource estimation, grade control, reconciliation, QA/QC and successful sample collection, with a strong skill set in exploration management for gold and base metals.
He is a Chartered Professional and Fellow with the AusIMM, a Member and Registered Professional Geologist with the AIG, and has published papers and provided training on sampling, QA/QC and resource estimation.
René is the principal author of many Canadian NI 43-101 and JORC compliant resource and exploration studies and has assisted clients with exploration programmes for these and other projects. He is a Competent/Qualified Person for gold (alluvial, shear-zone, epithermal and porphyry), base metals, seabed mineralisation (nodules), and industrial minerals (garnet sand, diatomite).
Currently, René is a director of the AusIMM, an ex-officio member of the JORC Committee, and a director of Straterra (New Zealand’s peak body and national voice for the natural resources industries). He is also a director of opaxe (monitoring public resource reports), and a director of a private-equity mineral exploration company advancing its strategic-mineral assets.
