Keynote Presentation | Disruption and opportunity: Australia and critical minerals in a changing global order

Biography

Ian Satchwell is a Senior Fellow at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute and an Adjunct Professor at The University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute. In both roles, Ian is researching and writing on the geopolitics of minerals and the leading role played by Australia and its companies in global minerals supply chains, with a focus on critical minerals. He is also lead advisor to the Association of South East Asian Nations, working with ASEAN and its member nations to formulate the next ASEAN minerals development plan. Over five years, the plan’s initiatives will lay the foundations to increase investment in sustainable minerals development, lift ASEAN’s output and trade in mineral products along the value chain, and deliver economic and social benefits.

Biography

Helen Degeling is a geologist and recognised, influential advocate for minerals development that delivers positive ESG outcomes and meets the demands of a just transition towards decarbonisation. She has previously held roles as a researcher, exploration and mine geologist, and exploration manager for junior precious, base and critical metal explorers, as well as leadership positions in critical minerals and sustainable mining across government and industry. Helen is now Director of Geoscience and Sustainability at Mining3, where she combines her traditional geological expertise and passion for circularity, sustainability and traceability to drive innovation and deliver practical solutions for the resources industry’s ‘next generation’ challenges.

Biography

Martin Lynch is a PhD student at the Sustainable Minerals Institute of the University of Queensland. He is studying the potential for aluminium and other substitutes to replace copper, thereby reducing the need for future major investments in copper mines. Prior to this he was for 15 years the owner and manager of a renewable energy business. And prior to that he worked for 20 years in various operational and analytical roles in the mining industry. He has written books and articles on the history and future of the mining industry and how it is driven by the broader global economy
