Multiscale Mineralogy of Clay-hosted REE deposits in Western and South Australia: Practical applications for exploration, sample domaining and resource modelling

Biography

Gabriel is a geologist with 16+ years of experience in exploration, mining, and academia. He has worked at AngloGold Ashanti (Exploration Manager), Colossus Minerals (Serra Pelada Au-PGE deposit), and as a 3D modelling consultant (Leapfrog expert). His expertise spans mineral exploration, geological modelling, resource evaluation, and directional drilling. He has a strong background in mineral systems, applied mineralogy, geochemistry, and analytical techniques (EMPA, LA-ICPMS, fluid inclusions). Gabriel holds a master’s from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, a Ph.D. from ETH Zurich, and has held research roles at the University of Helsinki and the Federal University of Ceará. His work covers diverse mineral systems, including sediment-hosted (Au-PGE, magnesite), magmatic-hydrothermal (pegmatites, Sn-W granites), IOCG, and orogenic gold, with additional contributions to agriculture and fertilisers.

Dr Tobias Bamforth
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Monash University

Defining Regolith-Hosted REE Deposits Using Multivariate Whole-Rock Geochemistry

Biography

Tobias Bamforth is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Monash University, whose research interests revolve around low-temperature geochemical systems with specific regards to critical metals and minerals. His work spans between the characterisation of natural ore deposits and samples, and experimental studies of critical minerals (mostly pertaining to the rare earth elements, REEs) to elucidate their natural formation conditions, chemical variations and relevance to mineralisation. His work also focusses on the application of multivariate statistical analyses to define large-scale regolith-hosted REE deposits, as a means to assist in the characterisation of challenging clay-rich ore samples and to develop a better understanding of the conditions that lead to REE mineralisation during supergene alteration.

Dr Natalee Bonnici
Senior Exploration Geologist
Critica Limited

Jupiter Rising: Unearthing Australia's largest clay-hosted REE deposit

Biography

Natalee is a geologist and geometallurgist with over 15 years' experience in mineral exploration and geometallurgy. Her PhD was completed in 2012 at CODES, University of Tasmania as part of the AMIRA P843 project focusing on improving and predicting metallurgical performance through mineralogy and textural relationships. Natalee was most recently with Northern Star for 7 years as a Senior Exploration Geologist for their Carbine project in Kalgoorlie, developing and delivering resources for the Paradigm, Phantom, Anthill and Carbine deposits prior to the sale of the project. Natalee worked as an exploration geologist and geometallurgist for Independance Group at the Stockman and Jaguar projects where she was part of the discovery team of the Triumph VHMS deposit. Natalee has been with Critica Limited (formerly Venture Minerals) as a Senior Exploration Geologist for the Brothers REE project since April 2024.

Dr Jessica Walsh
Project Leader – Accelerating Development of Australia’s Rare Earth Resources
Geoscience Australia

A national-scale assessment of clay-hosted rare earth element mineral system potential in Australia

Biography

Dr Jessica Walsh is the Project Leader of the Accelerating Development of Australia’s Rare Earth Resources (ADARER) project at Geoscience Australia, which operates under a funding envelope of the Australian Critical Minerals Research & Development (R&D) Hub. This project is a collaboration between Geoscience Australia, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), with ANSTO as the lead partner. The ADARER project at Geoscience Australia aims to develop comprehensive mineral system models associated with priority REE deposits (clay-hosted REE deposits), which will provide insights into the geological processes and conditions that govern their formation. Jessica is passionate about increasing and improving knowledge of Australia's REE mineral systems, and expanding the geological understanding of their potential, thereby improving investment confidence for new exploration and discovery in Australia.
