Speaker

Kevin Tom
Senior Mechanical Engineer
Howden Ventsim

Evaluating the influence of heat stress indices on refrigeration requirements during mine shaft excavations

2:05 PM - 2:30 PM

Biography

Kevin Tom is a senior engineer at Howden VentSim, a Chart Industries company. He is also a licensed professional engineer in Quebec, Canada. He has over 15 years of experience in modeling and simulating fluid and thermal systems in the mining and HVAC industries. Since 2015, he has been involved in underground mine ventilation projects of both hard rock and non-metallic varieties, at different engineering design phases, with a wide spectrum of production rates. His recent efforts in mine ventilation focuses on zero harm and improving health and safety as it relates to heat stress.

Biography

Marle Hooman is a registered chartered professional engineer and registered professional engineer in Queensland. In her 17 years at BBE, Marle has gained experience in pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, control budget estimates, and detailed engineering design, including procurement and construction management assistance (EPCM) for various surface and underground cooling and refrigeration systems in national and international mines. She is competent in using VUMA3D-network, VUMA-coal, and VentSim simulation software for mine ventilation network analysis. Marle is currently the Managing Director of BBE Consulting Australasia. She has also led engineering teams as a professional engineer in positions including lead engineer and project manager for the last thirteen years. Marle holds her master’s in mining engineering and a Mine Environmental Control Certificate from MVSSA.
Hamish Kerr
Senior Coal Engineer
BBE Consulting (Australasia)

Cooling study for an Australian underground longwall mine

3:20 PM - 3:45 PM

Biography

After studying mining engineering (Hons) at the University of Wollongong, Hamish started the Xstrata graduate program. Hamish continued to work for Xstrata and then Glencore coal mines in both NSW and QLD in various roles at several mine sites, during which Hamish sat for and was granted a certificate of competence to be an underground mine manager in NSW. In 2019, Hamish left Glencore for a Ventilation and Gas Specialist role with Yancoal before joining BBE as a consultant in 2022. This experience has exposed him to all aspects of mine management, from life of mine planning, feasibility, mine recovery, operations and projects. Hamish has planned for and dealt with ventilation and gas challenges from concept to mine closure. In the last decade, Hamish has focused on ventilation and gas management, which has led to Hamish becoming a principal engineer in this area for BBE.
