Biography

Jan Theiler is the Senior Mining Engineer at testing services company B3 Mines Services Pty Ltd in Brisbane. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering from the University of Queensland in 2013. Jan is continuing to develop his expertise in specialist spontaneous combustion testing and analysis of coal, shale, waste rock and concentrates for use in the development of leading practice Principal Hazard Management Plans for industry.

Biography

David Cliff is the Professor of Occupational Health and Safety in Mining at the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, UQ and was Director of MISHC from 2011 to 2016. His primary role is providing education, applied research and consulting in health and safety in the mining and minerals processing industry. He has been at MISHC since 2001. Previously David was the Safety and Health Adviser to the Queensland Mining Council, and prior to that, 11 years at the SIMTARS in a range of roles. He has provided expert assistance in the areas of health and safety to the mining industry around the world for over thirty five years. He has undertaken research into respirable dust, fitness for duty, emergency preparedness, spontaneous combustion, fires and explosions. He has been involved in the investigation of more than 30 major incidents including, Moura No.2, Hazelwood Mine, and Pike River. He was a member of the organizing committee for the level one emergency exercises in Queensland underground coal mines since their inception in 1998 till 2022.
