Session 10C: Case studies - Ventilation Air Methane (VAM)

Session C
Thursday, August 15, 2024
11:00 AM - 12:40 PM
Melbourne Room

Speaker

Guy Drouin
President
Biothermica Technologies Inc

Implementation of VAMOX™ Regenerative Thermal Oxidation (RTO) system for underground coal mine decarbonisation by abating Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) emissions.

11:00 AM - 11:25 AM

Biography

Mr Drouin is President of Biothermica, a company he founded in 1987. The company is dedicated to the development, financing, construction and operation of climate mitigation infrastructure projects based on coal mine methane and landfill gas valorization for carbon credits and energy sales. Over the last 30 years, Mr. Drouin financed, built, owned and operated the largest landfill gas power plant (25 MW) in Canada and a second similar project in El Salvador, registered under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of Kyoto Protocol selling carbon credits to Luxembourg. He financed and installed the first coal mine methane abatement project in North America based on its VAMOX® proprietary technology and the sales of the carbon credits on the Quebec-California cap-and-trade market. Mr Drouin holds an electric engineering degree from the Polytechnic School of Montreal and a Master's degree in Business Administration from McGill University.
Ms Amy Zander
Process Engineer
Hatch

Challenges facing oxidation of ventilation air methane using regenerative thermal oxidisers in the Australian coal industry

11:25 AM - 11:50 AM

Biography

Amy is a process engineer at Hatch, bringing experience in operations and consulting across various industries. At Hatch, Amy has been involved in various climate change projects including producing a decarbonisation pathway for coal mining assets, a ventilation air methane abatement project, greenhouse gas quantification for iron-making flowsheets and copper smelting flowsheets, and concept study for amine-based CO2 capture from flue gas. Amy has also worked a number of projects including a green ammonia production facility, a lithium hydroxide production plant, and hydrogen use study for steel producer. Amy has operations experience working in alumina refining and bauxite mining prior to joining Hatch.
Daniel Sepulveda
Senior Ventilation Engineer
Palaris

Enhancing Airflow and Heat Modelling Calibration in Underground Ventilation Networks with Dynamic Boundary Conditions in Ventsim

11:50 AM - 12:15 PM

Biography

Daniel is a Chilean mining engineer with extensive experience in underground mine ventilation engineering. He has led projects across Latin America, Europe, and most recently Australia. His expertise lies in ventilation network modeling, with a particular focus on heat simulations and refrigeration systems. Currently, he works as a Senior Ventilation Engineer at Palaris, where he is part of the decarbonization team, developing projects related to methane abatement, ventilation engineering, and gas management.
