Jason Schell is a senior executive with extensive operational expertise across a 30-year career in mining and mineral processing, Government, steel manufacturing and large complex EPCM/EPC capital projects. As Rex Minerals’ Chief Operating Officer, Jason is leading the development and operation of the Hillside copper-gold project in South Australia.
In the South Australian Government, Jason was the Chief Operating Officer in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet (DPC), Chief Procurement Officer (CPO) for Whole of Government (WoG) (excluding SAH) and Executive Director – ICT Transformation Project during his Government tenure. Jason was the Chair of the Committee for Unsolicited Proposals for the Department of Treasury and Finance. He was also a member of the State Procurement Board whilst CPO across WoG.
Jason was previously the Executive Managing Director (EMD) of the Whyalla Steelworks and was responsible for leading the operational transformation and successfully transformed the Whyalla Steelworks over a three-year period back to a sustainable business.
Jason has a long history (23 years) with the Olympic Dam Operations & Project in South Australia. He has previously held a number of senior management positions with BHP and WMC Resources, including General Manager Surface Operations, General Manager Smelter & Refinery, Vice President HSEC, Project Director, VP of Projects and Head of Human Resources & Industrial Relations. His previous community roles include as Chair of the Roxby Downs Town Board that acted between the Company, State of South Australia and local government under the special provision of the Roxby Downs (Indenture Ratification) Act 1982.
Jason holds a Bachelor of Engineering – Metallurgical Engineering (First Class Honours) from the University of South Australia; he is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy; a Fellow of Engineers Australia; a Member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply; and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

As the future energy system moves from a hydrocarbon intensive economy to a metals intensive economy, this will requiring a significant increase in metal and mineral mining across Australia and globally. With the constraints on industry that we are experiencing at the moment including attracting and retaining key expertise, how can we meet the demands of the future mining workforce and what are the insights from some of our more unusual mining career backgrounds? Matt Colquhoun hails from the mining team in KPMG and will discuss his journey from a military helicopter pilot to a mining consultant and why he believes the mining industry is an exciting career prospect over the coming decades.
Biography
Matthew has traced a journey from military engineer and helicopter pilot, through to work as a strategy and operations consultant, working with executives to achieve transformational business outcomes with some of the largest global organisations. He is passionate about collaborating with stakeholders in asset intensive sectors, to navigate complexity from the board to the front-line maintenance and operating crews.
Matthew is a Director at KPMG - Engineering and Asset Management Advisory in the Brisbane office focused on the mining sector. After over 15 years in Defence, primarily in aviation, he has spent close to 10 years in management consulting, supporting advisory projects to achieve business transformation, capability development and asset optimisation outcomes.
In addition, Matthew is an Admitted Lawyer to the Supreme Court of Queensland and a Chartered Professional Engineer in the Mechanical College (Aerospace Airworthiness). He is also a Certified Asset Management Assessor (CAMA) with the Asset Management Council of Australia. In this capacity he has focused on fleet and asset intensive sectors to support advisory projects in Defence, Aerospace, Transport, Government and Mining sectors.

Elyse’s professional journey began with a solid educational foundation in the resources field, which laid the groundwork for her evolving role in the industry. Her work and experiences with leading resource companies have equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of both technical and strategic aspects of the industry. This unique combination of skills and experiences allows her to offer invaluable insights and guidance as Summit Chair.
In her role, Elyse is responsible for curating and delivering a summit that not only celebrates the achievements of emerging leaders but also addresses the pressing challenges and opportunities facing the resources sector today. Her vision is to create an event that empowers participants with the tools, knowledge, and network needed to excel in a rapidly changing industry.
