Nurassyl Battalgazy is a Geoscience Data Analyst at IMDEX, where he is involved with the BLASTDOG project. He is also a final year PhD candidate at the Sustainable Minerals Institute, University of Queensland, specializing in the application of Machine Learning and Deep Learning in Resource Estimation. Nurassyl holds a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Mining Engineering from Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan. His expertise encompasses structural mapping, resource block modelling, and classification of resources. His academic and professional contributions include published papers in esteemed journals and conference presentations on AI in mineral resource assessment and geostatistical simulation algorithms.

Biography

Craig is a resource geologist with 29 years experience in the mining industry. During his career spent in mineral exploration, underground coal mining and mining consulting, he has worked on exploration tenements and operating mines located across four continents. He joined BHP in 2019, where he currently holds the position of Principal Resource Modelling at BMA Technical services, based in Brisbane. In addition to fulfilling the role of resource Competent Person for Caval Ridge mine, Craig is working towards the application of geological uncertainty to optimise drilling programs and de-risk mine plans. Apart from being a self-taught Python coder, he has dabbled in geostatistics long enough to finally take the plunge and register for a Graduate Certificate in Geostatistics and Spatial Modelling in 2024. He also holds an M.Sc. in Geology and a Graduate Certificate in Mining Engineering.
