Biography

Jason Schell is a senior executive with extensive operational expertise across a 30-year career in mining and mineral processing, Government, steel manufacturing and large complex EPCM/EPC capital projects. In the South Australian Government, Jason was the Chief Operating Officer in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet (DPC), Chief Procurement Officer (CPO) for Whole of Government (WoG) (excluding SAH) and Executive Director – ICT Transformation Project during his Government tenure. Jason was the Chair of the Committee for Unsolicited Proposals for the Department of Treasury and Finance. He was also a member of the State Procurement Board whilst CPO across WoG. Jason was previously the Executive Managing Director (EMD) of the Whyalla Steelworks and was responsible for leading the operational transformation and successfully transformed the Whyalla Steelworks over a three-year period back to a sustainable business. Jason has a long history (23 years) with the Olympic Dam Operations & Project in South Australia. He has previously held a number of senior management positions with BHP and WMC Resources, including General Manager Surface Operations, General Manager Smelter & Refinery, Vice President HSEC, Project Director, VP of Projects and Head of Human Resources & Industrial Relations. His previous community roles include as Chair of the Roxby Downs Town Board that acted between the Company, State of South Australia and local government under the special provision of the Roxby Downs (Indenture Ratification) Act 1982. Jason holds a Bachelor of Engineering – Metallurgical Engineering (First Class Honours) from the University of South Australia; he is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy; a Fellow of Engineers Australia; a Member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply; and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Biography

Lucy Barrie is a Mining Engineer at Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines, where she has completed her underground crew time, spent time as an Operations Engineer and has been in the Short-Term Scheduling team for the last 18 months. She holds an Honours degree in Mining Engineering from UNSW Sydney, where she first signed up with AusIMM and attended her first New Leaders in 2017. In her current role, Lucy is responsible for the three month rolling schedule for the copper sub-level open stoping operation (SLOS), but has also been engaged with projects for production, development and data reporting. Lucy is also the Vice-Chair of the AusIMM North West Queensland Branch, an AusIMM New Professionals Network Ambassador and in her spare time plays netball and likes to explore outback Queensland.

Biography

Jim has been fortunate over the last 25 years to have taken part in many different parts of the mining industry, from underground and open pit mining, brown and greenfields exploration, Prefeasibility and Feasibility phase capital projects, business development activity in mergers, acquisitions and divestments, as well as long term strategic planning, and short term delivery planning. He has done due diligence across diverse commodities (nickel, iron ore, copper, manganese, aluminium, potash and diamonds), and managed to get to every continent through work (barring Antarctica!). He is motivated by being part of something larger than myself, and the energy that being part of, or leading, a strong team brings. His focus is on maximising value, through focus on key value drivers, and working at the right level for the opportunity at hand. He also believes that how we do things, is just as important as what we do and accomplish, and that our values and performance are intimately linked.

Biography

Alex graduated from Liverpool John Moores university in 1998 as a mechanical engineer and immediately started working in the automotive industry as a materials handling system designer. From here Alex progressed through several roles and gained experience of all aspects of materials handling system delivery such as design, manufacture, assembly, delivery, installation and commissioning. In his last role before emigrating to Australia, Alex was the Managing Director of a specialised materials handling system supplier for over five years. Alex changed industry sectors in 2011 when he started a Project Management role with Sandvik and successfully delivered three of the largest bulk materials handling machines into Australia. The project had a value of circa $150 Million and was completed under budget and ahead of schedule, securing a bonus to Sandvik for early practical completion. From here Alex led the Mining System Customer Service team supporting clients with the installed base of over 100 stockyard machines in Australia. Alex is now responsible for ensuring the success of the FLSmidth Mining Systems Product Line within Australia Asia Pacific by providing full product technical and operational support across the mining and cement industries in accordance with the global product strategy.
