Biography

Having personally led six major business transformations over his 30 year career, Stephen Durkin is regarded as a seasoned change agent. Since May 2017 Stephen has been CEO of the AusIMM, the peak body for professionals in the mining industry, following the five years prior as CEO of Engineers Australia. In both instances Stephen has led widely applauded transformations of these long-standing Institutes to rebuild them to be more contemporary, financially sustainable, and with a stronger external brand. Prior to these positions leading professional associations, Stephen was at National Australia Bank for 15 years in a number of senior executive leadership roles including as State Manager, Retail Bank NSW/ACT. Stephen Durkin holds an MBA and a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours). Stephen has extensive experience in business and association management, and possesses highly-regarded skills in government, media and community relations. Stephen's leadership sets out the importance of teams and culture in building high performance organisations.

Biography

Guster is a 5th Year University Student at WASM, undergoing a double degree in Engineering and Finance. He is the president of the AusIMM Kalgoorlie Student Chapter, recipient of the AusIMM EEF Sir Frank Espie undergraduate scholarship, and Vice-President of the WASM Guild. He is also a tutor and AFL coach at WASM. Guster has worked in underground and open pit operations as both an operator and drill and blast engineer while as a vacation student with Newcrest and Northern Star. He is the AusIMM MinSoc 3rd year award winner.

Lauren is a student at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in 4th year of studies, pursuing a dual degree in Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) and Earth Science. She is a recipient of the 2023 AusIMM EEF Premium Undergraduate Scholarship and an industry representative for the QUT Natural Resources Society.

Biography

Josephine is currently a Masters of Professional Engineering (Mining Engineering) student at the University of Western Australia, having recently graduated from a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering and Economics. She is the 2020 Recipient of the AusIMM Eprioc Scholarship. Her journey in the mining industry commenced at the end of her first year of university in 2017. Josephine has undertaken vacation work with Mount Gibson Iron Limited, Fortescue Metals Group, PwC Australia, Deloitte Consulting and BHP Nickel West. Through the various roles, she had the opportunity to work in different facets of the mining industry such as environment and approvals, open-pit and underground mining engineering, metallurgy, external auditing and analytics and cognitive consulting which has developed her strong appreciation of the complex business landscape.

Biography

Seher Ata is an Associate Professor in the School of Minerals and Energy at University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Her research interests focus on fundamental and applied research in mineral processing with special emphasis on froth flotation, dewatering and integrating renewable energy in mineral processing. She has worked on a wide range of projects which have concentrated on the processing of low-grade complex by flotation, froth phase behaviour in industrial flotation cells, tailings reprocessing, and the impact of water chemistry on the efficiency of coal processing plants. She publishes widely and has recently been included in the world’s top 2% of Scientists List. Dr Ata is co-editor of Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy and on the editorial board of several journals and. She is also the UNSW representative of MN-001 Coal and Coke Standards Australia and leading the Australian Standards for coal flotation committee which aims to review and update the current Standard. Beyond her scholarly and academic work, Dr Ata is passionate about creating equity and diversity. She is a member of the Gender Equity Working Group and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
