Jeff Boisvert
Associate Professor and Co Director
Centre for Computational, Geostatistics

Panellist | Parker Challenge, Uncertainty, Classification, RPEEE

3:55 PM - 4:55 PM

Biography

Jeff is a professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta and co-director of the Centre for Computational Geostatistics (CCG). His research interests concentrate on geostatistical numerical modeling and uncertainty management with a focus on mining, petroleum, and wildland fire. Numerical modeling is concerned with generating a set of spatial models of variables such as mineral grade, contaminates, flow properties, fire behavior, etc. These models are used to make important engineering decisions in mine design, exploration campaign design, wildland fire management, preplanning, well placement, well management and contaminate cleanup strategies. Uncertainty management focuses on making these engineering decisions in an optimal way that maximizes value, minimizes environmental impact, and minimizes risk. Numerical modeling and uncertainty management are often framed as optimization problems, so machine learning, artificial intelligence, and optimization techniques are used to improve solutions.

Mr Dhaniel Carvalho
Principal Resource Geologist
Glencore

Panellist | Parker Challenge, Uncertainty, Classification, RPEEE

3:55 PM - 4:55 PM

Biography

Dhaniel Carvalho is the Principal Resource Geologist for Glencore in Australia, focused on 4 word-class mines: Mount Isa Cu and Pb-Zn mines and McArthur River Mine. With 11 years of experience with mineral resources evaluation, geological modeling and geostatistics he brings comprehensive experience in gold, zinc, lead, copper, and polymetallic deposits. He has advanced knowledge in geological modeling and mineral resources evaluation using classical and advanced geostatistical methods, construction of complex geological, and vast expertise with different commercial software and python scripting. With resource modeling experiences in Brazil, Canada, Peru, Australia, Kazakhstan, and Namibia, Dhaniel was responsible for preparation of mineral resources reports under the JORC and NI 43-101 guidelines, reconciliation of mineral resources and resources sign-off. Dhaniel recently pursued a master’s degree in Mining Engineering and Geostatistics at the University of Alberta, with focus on probabilistic resource estimation (geometry and grade simulation), under supervision of Dr. Clayton Deutsch. This experience developed not only his geostatistical knowledge but also the scripting skills required for building automation tools for a range of interesting resource modeling problems. He is currently based in Brisbane, Australia.

Mrs Cecilia Artica
Principal Resource Geologist
Rio Tinto

Panellist | Parker Challenge, Uncertainty, Classification, RPEEE

3:55 PM - 4:55 PM

Biography

Cecilia is currently a Principal Resource Geologist in the Rio Tinto Copper Technical group based in Brisbane. Cecilia’s 25 years of experience in mineral resource estimation, geological modelling and exploration programs, has given her a strong understanding of all facets of the mining value chain. She has been involved in the development of mining projects from exploration programs to the feasibility study level and operating mines. During Cecilia’s time in consulting, she worked closely with Dr Harry Parker and Dr Georges Verly and together they presented a paper about a Classification and Grade Control Dilution Study via Conditional Simulation work that they performed in 2017. Prior to this, Cecilia was Head of the Information and Resource Estimation Department for Southern Copper Corporation – at that time, the biggest copper producer in Peru – where she was part of the discovery team of La Tapada copper porphyry deposit (500 Mt @ 0.41% Cu). Continuous development is very important to Cecilia, and she has completed numerous post-graduate courses in the areas of geometallurgy, geostatistics, QA/QC, finance, and mine management since graduating with a Masters from the University of Brasilia, Brazil in 2006. Currently, she is studying a part-time Masters in Geometallurgy at the University of Queensland.
