Mr Dhaniel Carvalho
Principal Resource Geologist
Glencore

Panel Facilitator | Geological Modelling Software: Development and Limitations

11:05 AM - 11:55 AM

Biography

Dhaniel Carvalho is the Principal Resource Geologist for Glencore in Australia, focused on 4 word-class mines: Mount Isa Cu and Pb-Zn mines and McArthur River Mine. With 11 years of experience with mineral resources evaluation, geological modeling and geostatistics he brings comprehensive experience in gold, zinc, lead, copper, and polymetallic deposits. He has advanced knowledge in geological modeling and mineral resources evaluation using classical and advanced geostatistical methods, construction of complex geological, and vast expertise with different commercial software and python scripting. With resource modeling experiences in Brazil, Canada, Peru, Australia, Kazakhstan, and Namibia, Dhaniel was responsible for preparation of mineral resources reports under the JORC and NI 43-101 guidelines, reconciliation of mineral resources and resources sign-off. Dhaniel recently pursued a master’s degree in Mining Engineering and Geostatistics at the University of Alberta, with focus on probabilistic resource estimation (geometry and grade simulation), under supervision of Dr. Clayton Deutsch. This experience developed not only his geostatistical knowledge but also the scripting skills required for building automation tools for a range of interesting resource modeling problems. He is currently based in Brisbane, Australia.

Michelle Carey
Chief of Product Management & Marketing
Imdex Limited

Panellist | Geological Modelling Software: Development and Limitations

11:05 AM - 11:55 AM

Biography

Michelle Carey is an accomplished Technology Executive, Board Member, Geologist, Geochemist, Environmental Hydrologist and is PhD accredited. She started her career in 1995 in the Western Australian Goldfields region as a geologist before taking the plunge and moving to Melbourne to do her PhD. On finishing she applied her skills in the environmental sphere working for a large consultancy group in the early noughties. It’s here that Michelle developed her drive for taking a strategic approach in balancing what’s best for the environment, community and project. Michelle couldn't resist the lure of exploration returning to WMC (BHP post takeover). Michelle built her management expertise in this time which saw her taking on exploration management roles. It was in these management roles that Michelle decided she wanted to take a different direction and move into Technology. She joined ioGlobal as their Geochemistry Manager and it wasn’t long before she was promoted into the Chief Operating Officer role. In 2012 ioGlobal was acquired by Imdex Limited where Michelle has held various Senior Leadership and Executive positions. Her current role is Chief of Product Management & Marketing and she is also a non-executive Board Member at Austmine and Datarock.

Kathleen Hansmann
Product Manager Geology
Datamine Software

Panellist | Geological Modelling Software: Development and Limitations

11:05 AM - 11:55 AM

Biography

Kathleen Hansmann is Datamine’s global resource modelling Product Manager, based in Bristol in the UK. Kathleen plays a pivotal role in guiding the direction of Datamine’s resource modelling software solutions. The most effective product managers not only believe in their products, but are driven by them. As Kathleen declares; “As a resource geologist, you never stop questioning how to better capture your geological understanding into a computer model. As a resource geologist working for a software company, you get to build the tools to do that”. Product management at Datamine is a challenging but hugely rewarding role, and Kathleen’s experience of operational and resource geology spanning over 20 years provides an essential familiarity (and empathy) with the day-to-day usage of mining software in the resource modelling domain. With oversight of the Studio RM Engineering teams and strong connections to Datamine’s consultative and commercial functions, Kathleen has guided several pivotal projects in recent years, including the adoption of implicit modelling functionality and an overhaul of Datamine’s suite of resource estimation solutions. There’s never a dull moment, and she’s currently managing the creation of a new Datamine product for geologists – Studio Geo, coming soon. Kathleen holds an MEng in Geostatistics from the University of Witwaterrand and a BSc (Hons) in Geology and Computer Science from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa.
