Mr John Lowry
Landform Modeller
Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water - Supervising Scientist Branch
Assessing the effectiveness of erosion predictions from a landform evolution model with field observations from a rehabilitated landform
1:05 PM - 1:20 PMBiography
John Lowry has over 20 years experience as a spatial scientist and geomorphologist, focussing on rivers, wetlands, and uranium mining activities in Australia and south east Asia. His current research focus is on the application of data from drones for monitoring erosion on disturbed landscapes; and the application of landscape evolution models to model the impact of extreme climatic events on mine-impacted environments over extended periods of time.
Dr Pascal Bolz
Research Fellow
Sustainable Minerals Insitute
High-resolution erosion modelling using the RUSLE: An application to open cut coal mine operations
1:20 PM - 1:35 PMBiography
Integrating and analysing spatial data across all components of the Earth system, including its anthropogenic modifications, allows to combine and analyse complex data and make it accessible to anyone. Spatial Science is capabale to perform in-depth scientific analysis and is directly connected to easily understandable mapping outputs. Pascal's work at the Sustainable Minerals Institute is focussing on regional perspectives on our transitioning mining regions across Australia and highlights vulnerabilties, challenges and opportunities for the transitioning industry. This work is already informing decision makers today about the opportunities and risks that lie ahead. On the other hand, Pascal works on improving environmental management practices is making an impact on the technical skillset of environmental staff in mine sites across Australia, improving their understanding of environmental modelling to address environmental challenges in mining using Spatial Science.
Mr Bill Fuller
CEO
Australian Seeds Authority
Traceability of native seed for mine rehabilitation
1:35 PM - 1:50 PMBiography
Bill Fuller BAgrSc, GDipBus, MBA, MAICD is currently the part time CEO of the Australian Seeds Authority (ASA) and is highly respected in the seed industry having been the CEO of the Australian Seed Federation prior. Bill is also the principal consultant for Bill Fuller Consulting. Bill Fuller Consulting works in the Australian agribusiness sector and in member-based organisations, with a focus on project development and management, technology transfer, industry analytics and corporate governance.
Mr Harley Thomas
CTO
Trust Provenance Pty Ltd
Traceability of native seed for mine rehabilitation
1:35 PM - 1:50 PMBiography
In November 2018 Harley had the pleasure to begin employment at Boeing Defence Australia within their Data Analytics capability. Here he conducted a significant refactoring of Boeing Maintenance Workflow Analytics (BMWA), to improve maintainability and enable future growth of the product. This body of work resulted in more customer engagements within the business, and he was awarded a Boeing Wirraway Award along with his teammates as a result.
Lately, he is working on a deep-learning model for network optimization and developing a solution where customers can realise this benefit in a production environment. This has been an excellent opportunity, as he has been able to merge his theoretical interests of Machine Learning he curated at University, along with solid Software Engineering and design principles learnt at Boeing.
He prides myself on the ability to learn new concepts and applying them to provide business value to stakeholders.
Veronica Knott
Engineering Superintendent
Rio Tinto
Diavik Diamond Mine North Country Rock Pile: An example of integrated mine planning for successful progressive reclamation
1:50 PM - 2:05 PMBiography
Veronica Knott is a qualified Mining Engineer, and has worked in technical, operational and leadership roles in Canada and Mexico. Since joining Diavik in 2020, Veronica started with the A21 Open Pit and then transferred to the Projects group to lead the NCRP and other progressive closure bulk earthworks projects.
Veronica is passionate about merging the operational and projects' processes to allow for a mine plan approach to bulk earthworks ensuring integration of progressive closure activities into the mine plan.
A/Prof Mansour Edraki
Associate Professor
Sustainable Minerals Institute
The role of scale in prediction of mine drainage chemistry
2:05 PM - 2:20 PMBiography
Mansour Edraki is a leading expert in environmental geochemistry applied to mine waste and mine water management. He joined UQ in 2000 after completion of his PhD at the University of New England and has been conducting research projects for the mining industry since then. He is currently leading the Environmental Geochemistry Group at SMI.
Dr Edraki is the Chair of the Australian AMD Workshop series and was Chair of the last International Conference on Acid Rock Drainage (ICARD 2022). He represents SMI in the Global Alliance Program of INAP (International Network for Acid Prevention).
Mr Roneel Narayan
PhD Candidate
The University of Queensland
Alternative mineral processing strategies for copper- gold tailings management
2:20 PM - 2:35 PMBiography
Roneel Narayan is a PhD candidate at The University of Queensland. The title of Roneel's thesis is Alternative Mineral Processing Strategies for Cu- Au Tailings Management.
The objective of Roneel's research is to identify operational changes that provide benefits for tailings management. The aim of the research is to enhance the overall value chain in mine and plant operations, as well as to determine the possible impacts and prospects of Coarse Particle Flotation (CPF) and High Voltage Pulse (HVP) technologies for tailings management.
Roneel has over ten years of experience in heavy industry, plant maintenance, and process engineering across many sectors. A substantial portion of this experience focused on process improvement, optimisation, value chain analysis, and the implementation of Lean production techniques across a variety of industries.
Roneel holds a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Mechanical Engineering) from the University of the South Pacific (USP) and a Master of Business Administration and Master of Project Management from The University of Southern Queensland (USQ).
