AusIMM is pleased to offer Life of Mine delegates the opportunity to take part in an all inclusive site tour to Meandu Mine, in Queensland's South Burnett region.
Work first began on Meandu Mine in the South Burnett in 1978 after the Queensland Government made the decision to go ahead with the construction of the adjacent Tarong Power Station. The mine is 25 kilometres south-east of Kingaroy in the Queensland South Burnett region.
Meandu Mine currently has five working pits and is capable of supplying the adjacent Tarong Power Stations with up to seven million tonnes of coal a year.
Rehabilitation is an essential part of responsible mining – and when the last excavator leaves a section of Stanwell’s Meandu Mine, it’s just the beginning for that section of land’s future.
Stanwell has undertaken progressive rehabilitation of Meandu Mine ever since acquiring the site, minimising the active area of mining operations at any point in time to ensure that the land can be effectively returned to a sustainable post-mining use.

Biography
The Meandu Mine is an operational open cut coal mine that is 25 kilometres south-east of Kingaroy in the Queensland South Burnett region. Meandu Mine provides coal to the Tarong coal fired power station that is a major provider of electricity to Queensland and the National Electricity Market. The Meandu Mine is progressively rehabilitating mining areas to a native eucalypt woodland and is exploring grazing and plantation forestry. Meandu has achieved successful certification of one of the largest native vegetation areas approved in Queensland.
