Title: Managing 20Mt Leo Slope Failure at Bingham Canyon Mine – A Mine Planners Perspective
Overview: Eric Hoffmann will present a mine planners perspective on the 2021 Leo Slope Failure, where 20Mt of material failed at the Bingham Canyon Mine. This presentation describes the events and that lead up to the failure and how mine planners and schedulers worked with the geotechnical team to safely and productively manage the large-scale geotechnical instability. The focus of the presentation is to outline:
- The steps taken by the Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper team to mitigate the Leo Slope Failure
- The role the mine planning team played in ensuring safety was maintained and productivity was maximized
