The Turrbal Tribe comprises direct descendants of the original owners and custodians of Brisbane. These bloodlines link Turrbal peoples’ past, present and future to one another, with traditional customs and laws intact.
Jahmarley Dawson is an emerging Aboriginal leader who lives in Brisbane where he is linked to the Turrbal People through bloodline connection and kinship ties. He has a strong connection to his people and culture. This morning he is here on behalf of his aunty, Turrbal Elder, Songwoman Maroochy, who was unable to join us.

Alex is a mining engineer with 16 years of experience in operational roles and as a consultant. His experience spans underground and open pit mining, with roles including geotechnical engineering, mine production and long term planning. He was a site engineer at the Cannington, Ernest Henry and Mount Isa mines over a 12 year period in various roles from graduate the engineering superintendent. Alex has worked on over 50 different mines across six continents since becoming a consultant four years ago. Alex’s specialises in mining strategy and geotechnical engineering for underground mines, particularly caving operations, and deep and highly seismic mines.

Stephen Durkin is CEO of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), the peak body representing 13,000 members working in the resources sector.
Stephen is a civil engineer by qualification and throughout his 30-year career has worked in a wide range of industries around the world. His experience encompasses association management and business leadership, including CEO of Engineers Australia for 5 years and AusIMM CEO since May 2017.
Stephen is passionate about transforming associations so that they continue to lead the way in upholding professional standards and supporting members’ careers.
He is a champion of professionals and their vital role to provide trusted advice to the communities and organisations they serve.

Corrie has worked in industry for the last 30 years, starting as the Group Human Resources and Safety Manager at Impala Platinum and as the Group Risk Manager of a large corporation (Gencor/Billiton) in South Africa until 1993.
He founded Safemap International in 1994 in Australia and is since based in Vancouver, Canada. He is regarded today as one of the leading safety experts globally and he consults internationally to Anglo American, De Beers, Nike, Southern Company, and many others.
Corrie is a specialist in the field of safety culture, safety leadership and risk management and is widely known for his development of new safety concepts and risk theory. He has implemented many interventions, including an industry-wide safety culture survey of the mining industry in Australia in 2000, and advanced critical risk management systems for De Beers. He developed and facilitated a highly successful “Elimination of Fatalities” program for a global mining corporation. He holds BA and Honours degrees in industrial psychology, business, and education, and an MBA.
Corrie is a speaker at many safety conferences around the world, including several keynotes on occupational safety and leadership at the USA National Safety Congress between 2017 and 2020.
