Biography

Jacopo Buongiorno is the TEPCO Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the Director of Science and Technology of the MIT Nuclear Reactor Laboratory. He teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in thermo-fluids engineering and nuclear reactor engineering. Jacopo has published 90 journal articles in the areas of reactor safety and design, two-phase flow and heat transfer, and nanofluid technology. For his research work and his teaching at MIT he won several awards, among which the ANS Outstanding Teacher Award (2019), the MIT MacVicar Faculty Fellowship (2014), the ANS Landis Young Member Engineering Achievement Award (2011), the ASME Heat Transfer Best Paper Award (2008), and the ANS Mark Mills Award (2001). Jacopo is the Director of the Center for Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems (CANES). In 2016-2018 he led the MIT study on the Future of Nuclear Energy in a Carbon-Constrained World. Jacopo is a consultant for the nuclear industry in the area of reactor thermal-hydraulics, and a member of the Accrediting Board of the National Academy of Nuclear Training. He is also a member of the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board (SEAB) Space Working Group, a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society (including service on its Special Committee on Fukushima in 2011-2012), a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, past member of the Naval Studies Board (2017-2019), and a participant in the Defense Science Study Group (2014-2015).

Biography

Sama Bilbao y León became the Director General of World Nuclear Association in October 2020. Sama has more than 20 years of experience in nuclear engineering and energy policy. Sama has a very diverse professional experience having worked in the nuclear industry (Nuclear Safety Analysis Engineer, Dominion Energy, USA), in academia (Director of Nuclear Engineering Programs and Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), USA) and in international organisations (Head of the Division of Nuclear Technology Development and Economics at the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), Head of the Technical Secretariat for the Generation IV International Forum (GIF), Head of Water Cooled Reactors Technology Development Unit, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)). Sama, who is originally from Spain, holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a master’s degree in Energy Technologies from the Polytechnic University of Madrid; a master's degree and a PhD in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics from the University of Wisconsin – Madison; and an MBA from Averett University. Sama is one of the seven founders of the North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NA-YGN).

Biography

Daniel B. Poneman is president and chief executive officer of Centrus Energy Corp. He also serves on the company’s board of directors. From 2009 to 2014, Mr. Poneman was the Deputy Secretary of Energy, also serving as the chief operating officer of the U.S. Department of Energy. His responsibilities spanned the range of U.S. energy policies and programs – hydrocarbons, renewables, nuclear, and efficiency – including cybersecurity, project management, national security, and international cooperation. He was also responsible for the Department’s efforts on resilience and emergency response, in cases ranging from Fukushima to Hurricane Sandy. Between April 23, 2013, and May 21, 2013, Mr. Poneman served as Acting Secretary of Energy. Prior to assuming his responsibilities as Deputy Secretary, Mr. Poneman served as a principal of the Scowcroft Group for eight years, providing strategic advice to corporations in a variety of strategic industries. In addition, for eight years he practiced law as a partner at Hogan & Hartson and an associate at Covington & Burling, advising clients on regulatory and policy matters. In prior tours in government, Mr. Poneman served as a White House Fellow and as Director of Defense Policy and Arms Control for the National Security Council. From 1993 through 1996 he was Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Nonproliferation and Export Controls at the National Security Council. His responsibilities included the development and implementation of U.S. policy in such areas as peaceful nuclear cooperation, missile technology, space-launch activities, sanctions determinations, chemical and biological arms control efforts, and conventional arms transfer policy. Mr. Poneman has published widely on national security issues and is the author of Nuclear Power in the Developing World and Argentina: Democracy on Trial. His third book, Going Critical: The First North Korean Nuclear Crisis (coauthored with Joel Wit and Robert Gallucci), received the 2005 Douglas Dillon Award for Distinguished Writing on American Diplomacy. Mr. Poneman is a Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School, a Distinguished Fellow at the Paulson Institute, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. His fourth book, Double Jeopardy: Combating Nuclear Terror and Climate Change, was released by the MIT Press in May 2019. Mr. Poneman received A.B. and J.D. degrees with honors from Harvard University and an M.Litt. in Politics from Oxford University.

Biography

Tony Williams is head of the nuclear fuel department of the Swiss Electricity Utility Axpo Power AG, the company which is responsible for the general- and fuel-management of the two Beznau PWR units and the Leibstadt BWR in Switzerland. In this position, his responsibilities include uranium-, enrichment- and fabrication-procurement, in-house core design, planning of interim on and off-site storage, flask procurement and transport as well as some aspects of final disposal. He is a member of the general management boards of NPP Leibstadt and of the Division of Nuclear Energy of Axpo Power AG. He is a member of the Swiss nuclear fuel commission and a board member of ZWILAG AG, the facility responsible for interim dry fuel storage and waste conditioning in Switzerland. In previous positions he was manager of a research programme investigating fuel and core issues related to Pebble Bed Modular Reactors as well as working as a reactor physicist for the British commercial nuclear industry. In 2008 he was elected Chairman of the World Nuclear Fuel Market, an industry group dedicated to the promotion of business in the field of nuclear fuel, a position which he held for two years. In addition to a diploma in Business Management, Dr Williams has an honours degree in Physics from Durham University (1981) as well as an M.Sc. and Doctors degree in neutron physics from Birmingham University (1984).

Small Modular Reactors in the Australian context

Biography

Ben Heard is arguably Australia’s best recognised and most experienced advocate for the beneficial uses of nuclear technologies. He is a doctoral-qualified energy analyst and modeller (University of Adelaide), who modelled the integration of nuclear and renewable technologies to achieve affordable, reliable electricity supply for the National Electricity Market of Australia. He is also a masters-qualified sustainability professional (Monash University). Ben works as a consultant in the Asset Performance team of Frazer-Nash Consultancy, an international systems engineering firm. In 2016 he founded Bright New World, Australia’s first environmental not-for-profit that openly supports the use of nuclear technologies. Ben has delivered reviews of economic opportunities in the nuclear fuel cycle, proposals for advanced reactor and recycling project appended to used fuel storage, and a review of the environmental performance of the Australian uranium sector. He has authored award-winning and highly-shared peer-reviewed papers discussing the challenges of energy transitions and the role for nuclear technologies. He was a member of the Public Advisory Panel for the siting of Australia’s low-and-intermediate level waste store and repository. He is an environmental advisor to Terrestrial Energy, a Canadian-based developer of the Integral Molten Salt Reactor. Ben is a regular conference fixture at international, national and state fora in nuclear, mining and major projects, discussing contemporary challenges and opportunities in the nuclear sector. A regular contributor to print, radio and TV media, he has also featured as one of the global voices in the film ‘Juice: How Electricity Explains the World’, and brought the world inside the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station on a top rated episode of 60 Minutes. His broader sustainability experience includes renewable energy systems, climate change adaptation and mitigation, sustainable transport, and stakeholder consultation, including economic and business case development with multi-disciplinary teams.

Biography

Brandon Munro is Chief Executive Officer of Namibian focussed uranium developer Bannerman Resources Ltd. With over 20 years’ experience as a lawyer and resources executive, Brandon has a deep understanding of Environment Social Governance principles and Corporate Social Responsibility. Whilst serving as Bannerman Resources’ General Manager between 2009-2011 Brandon was responsible for the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment of the Etango Uranium Project and subsequent Namibian government environmental approvals. During that time he served on the Steering Committee of the world-first Strategic Environmental Assessment on the cumulative effects of uranium mine development in the Namib desert. Brandon lived in Namibia from 2009-2015, where he also served as Governance Advisor to the Namibian Uranium Association and Strategic Advisor – Mining Charter to the Namibian Chamber of Mines. A corporate lawyer by background, Brandon has a Diploma in Corporate Governance (AICD) and has held directorships with various ASX-listed companies in the resources and technology sector. His voluntary roles have included serving as a Trustee for high-profile conservation NGO, Save the Rhino Trust Namibia. Bannerman Resources is an ASX and OTCQB listed uranium development company that is focussed on the Etango-8 uranium project in Namibia. It is regarded within Namibia as an ESG leader. For example, the Company recently celebrated the 10th year anniversary of its Learner Assistance Program which has assisted more than 3000 under-privileged Namibian learners to attend school.
